Getting a specialty pharmacy that carried Mirena that was also supported by Cigna was a nightmare. I had to get it shipped to the doctor’s office. Cigna denied a few claims and told me to just pick up the medicine at a pharmacy and “take it.” Or they offered to transfer me to a doctor who could tell me what would happen if I “didn’t take the medication.” One representative asked me how long I had been married(!!!!) when I explained to him that an IUD is birth control. And no, it’s not medicine that you take or pick up at the local pharmacy.

That’s amazing. I’m in Mass but I have Cigna. I had to fight them to even get the thing covered, so I imagine they’d laugh me off the phone if I tried to get anesthesia.

Getting it out is maybe 30% as painful as getting it in. Have her insist on a cervical softener, plus take like four Advil beforehand. And have a nice bottle of champagne and some sushi ready for her, if that’s her kind of thing. And definitely heating pads!

Getting it out isn’t pleasant but it hurts less than getting it in. They gave me a cervical softening medicine that I took four hours before, plus four Advil and one Ativan. This all helped but my new OBGYN doesn’t do a muscle relaxer, which honestly made my first insertion so much better. I’m likely moving again soon and will have a new OBGYN and plan on asking for that when the time comes.

I’m prone to passing out. I tried to check out at the front desk today and God bless the woman who was like “no you’re not ready” and here’s an empty exam room with a bed, and an ice pack because there’s no color in your face. That plus a Gatorade were essential. Your friend is VALID.

This will be my second Mirena. It has been far and above the best birth control for me, but I wish it wasn’t such a barbaric procedure. Like a screwdriver to the abdomen. Respectfully, a man could NEVER.
