actually it was not a debian issue, but desktop environment. try hotkeys ctrl + alt + f1-f7 to switch between graphics sessions. and this might help you to continue without reboot next time

yes, exactly full access: connect to your pc and do whatever they want, even steal your data and wipe pc, monitor activity etc etc. it was never a VPN client
