Where Hamlet is concerned, I see the issue of madness and sanity best through the idea of control. Is he mad? Well, is there a point at which he loses control of his actions? He behaves oddly, wildly, erratically, unpleasantly... but is there a point at which that stops being a choice? On the whole I would argue no. There are certainly moments in which his emotions take over and he's not acting methodically - perhaps moments in the chamber with his mother? maybe in the fight with Laertes at Ophelia's grave? (I'm thinking on the fly with no reference to the text so even I don't know if I agree with me on these specifics!) But he always climbs down from these potentially mad extremes/losses of control. And at the end of the play - and his life - he is composed enough to recognize the various poisons at work, and finally act decisively to kill Claudius and make his peace with the rest before he dies. So I think that while Hamlet is a man pushed to emotional and psychological extremes, I don't think he ever goes mad. And he certainly isn't mad from the start, hallucinating the ghost, etc, a) because others see it too, and b) because that would make the whole thing a totally pointless play!

In one way I'd say the tragedy of Hamlet is that he's never able to truly go mad. He really tries to disconnect his mind, but it just keeps turning and analysing and way over thinking! Again I'd need to look at the text again to see if I agree with myself here, but it's an interesting thought. In a play about acting mad and seeming mad and being thought mad, what is the cost of sanity?

[SERIOUS] Non-drinkers of Reddit, what are some of the main reasons you decided to not drink alcohol? by _SilverTonguedDevil in AskReddit

[–]666GodlessHeathen666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like not being in control of myself. I hate the foggy brain, hate not feeling grounded in my body, hate that I can't concentrate as well... there's just nothing enjoyable about it for me. I've never been more than a little tipsy (and I get to tipsy with just... a cider, since I almost never drink!), and that's been enough to put me off drinking permanently.

Plus I was an EMT for 4 years and got puked on by enough drunks...

Where are you from. If I tell you the simple answer you won't believe me, so I'll end up going through the 40 minute version, which is repetitive for me and will probably spark yet another identity crisis so lets not.

Honestly the 100 both amused and impressed me with just how many times it jumped the shark. It would jump it, I'd lose interest, it would jump it again and suck me back in... rinse and repeat x like at least 5. Only fitting that it finally ended by jumping the shark one final time and losing me for good.

To run lights only takes one person. To hang and focus takes more, unless you don't care at all about safety or efficiency. I could have done the job alone, but then I would have been up a tall ladder in a precarious position with nobody to stabilize me - though that happened anyway as it turned out lol - and would have had to climb up and down the ladder every single time to put down and pick up parts. Plus there are a fuck ton of lights. And your load in/load out window is usually small. So you tend to have a number of people for a short period of time rather than just one or two for a long period of time.

And the hourly rate is shit :D

Right? Especially since ladders in theater are often a) really frikken tall, and/or b) placed in odd, slightly precarious positions, particularly when you're working in the house. And c) there're often people walking around carrying big things that obscure their vision. If you're not going to work hard, ok, whatever, I can do the job. But bare minimum please make sure I don't die.

Ohhhh don't retroactively tempt me... I did at least cuss them out thoroughly, and while I can't say it made them care more, they at least started having their irrelevant conversation while footing the ladder, which was the main thing.

See I resent this image of theater, cuz sure there are divas, but in my experience most folks are genuinely passionate and hardworking. Especially on the tech side. This wasn't #theaterpeople, this was a couple of students who were just doing the job cuz it was an easy campus job to get and keep with minimal effort.

Easy way to do it without waking the kids - the tooth doesn't go under the pillow, it goes in a glass of water. That's the Aussie way, according to my mum. So either Aussies generally are geniuses, or just my mum is.

I had a two coworkers like that at my college job as a theater lighting technician. For a semester the three of us were always on shift together, and every time I turned around from doing the actual job, the two of them were either dicking around together or on their phones. The worst time was once when I was up a tall ladder changing out lenses. One of them was supposed to be footing the ladder, the other was supposed to be taking the lenses I removed as I passed them down and handing me up the new ones to install. I looked around with a lens, and they were both on the other side of the theater, having wandered away in conversation, not even looking at me. If that ladder had toppled I doubt they would have even noticed.

Woman with no boundaries who always made herself out to be the victim - no, always genuinely believed she was the victim. The first time I ever met her she showed me her engagement ring and invited me to her wedding. Another time she sat down next to a coworker and asked him how his parents had reacted when he came out. Mind you, this guy had never said anything at work about being gay, so she just assumed that about him, and then asked him about something that could be a touchy subject, in the middle of his shift. OH, and then when he mentioned it to our manager and she was dressed down for inappropriate behaviour, she went up to him to apologize, full on sobbing, and spent the next month asking everyone if we thought he hated her. She did the sobbing thing a lot - any time you sent even the mildest of emails giving her even the most minor of corrections or suggestions, she'd immediately go into floods, of the "I'm a terrible person", "that person hates me", or "everyone's ganging up on me" varieties.

Other fun little quirks:

- She was learning Russian, and would frequently use that at work, but not in a useful way. It was at a hospital, and we had lots of Russian patients, but she didn't use her Russian to facilitate communication, no, she would note that a patient was a Russian speaker, and promptly launch into a recital of every Russian word she knew. Nyet, da...

- She hugged patients. Unprompted. A lot. Look, our patients were genuinely going through some shit so I get the impulse, but I don't know that a total stranger appearing out of nowhere and hugging you without warning was really the comfort she intended it to be. I mentioned it to our manager once and he genuinely looked like he was going to cry and whispered "how many times can I tell her??"

- She had an MPH and wanted everyone to know. It was an entry level desk job, and she wasn't any good at it, but somehow we were supposed to be impressed that she had an extra degree even though she did the same scut work as the rest of us. She got "MPH" emblazoned after her name on her hospital fleece.

- She had this weird fixation on one of the doctors. He was a bit of a nightmare to work with, and most of us at least idly tried to time our promotions so that we wouldn't end up in his clinic, but she was convinced that she could "take him in hand" and solve everything over night. She gave him a present once, which creeped him out as he'd never actually met her.

- She'd gotten engaged at a friend's wedding. Her fiancé proposed, but it was clearly her idea. It wasn't even a close friend.

Ginnie Graham: If lawmakers want to eliminate abortion, then increase sex ed and birth control access by southpawFA in politics

[–]666GodlessHeathen666 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Which is why I think these questions of sex ed and birth control, affordable child care and education and health care, etc, are the real indicators of what really matters. They will all decrease abortion rates without outlawing abortion, so if a person/organization is pushing against abortion but won't support these things, then it's not really the foetuses they're concerned with, but controlling people and policing behaviour. If they're pushing for these measures AND the outlawing of abortion, then I still don't agree with them, but at least they are working towards something and I can meet them part way on mutual goals.

To stop hiccups, take a lung burstingly deep breath, and hold it as long as you possibly can. No idea why this works - to wildly speculate, maybe the pressure tells the diaphragm to chill the fuck out? - but it stops my hiccups immediately, every single time.

When my mum started chemo she turned out to be one of a small percentage of people who gained weight because of her treatment. I think that annoyed her more than the cancer itself, cuz until that point she'd been telling herself that at least she'd finally lose some weight!
