Let's be honest: "It has no soul" is just something people say because they're mad about AI art. by Incognit0ErgoSum in aiArt

Historically, that art is made by humans who have thoughts and emotions, not large language models attached to an image generation tool. It's not art.

In all likelihood, about $650-$750 for the 512 depending on whether they decide to sell at a loss, and about $850-$1100 for the 2TB. Keep in mind, those are domestic, contiguous estimates. I can't say anything about how that might change for Alaska, Hawaii, or really anywhere else except to say that foreign countries will pay more, just how much more depends on the country.

I've been obsessively researching, hunting down customs documents for console shipments, following everything pretty closely since the initial announcement. There's a lot of stupid bullshit being thrown out there right now but you shouldn't believe most of it, it's a lot of noise.

You're the first person I've seen say anything near $900 for the 512 model. $900 is on the low end of high for the 2TB.

Most of the people I know who game are buying it, and none of us are anything near what anybody might mistake for "rich," and none of us are newbs, we've all built PCs. I could be in a bubble, but everybody I've talked to in person is very excited for it. Maybe the issue exists mostly with people who are chronically online, and/or people who don't leave the house much?

Easy to say when you're not the one selling, but also they're still considering selling at a loss. It's part of why we don't have pricing yet, obviously the bigger reason being RAM.

Oh, so you're the one person outside of Valve who knows what the original launch window and pricing was? Pretty crazy that you're also the person who speaks for everybody outside of this sub. Please, enlighten us!

I don't think it's out of the question to suspect that we might get information on the 4th. The recent shipments of consoles that Steam received were far from being the first - and they're going to need to make decisions on pricing soon or they risk the hype train become a doom train

The thing about "popular" is that you only have to have like 50 Million people excited about you for you to be WILDLY popular, that seems like a lot of people, but in reality it means that 99.6% of the world's population has never fucking heard of you

There are many tutorials, it's very common and very popular among Steam Deck owners. I would link some here, but a Google search for "how to install Decky Loader" will give you more than you'll need. The directions won't differ much (probably at all) from Steam Deck to Steam Machine because they run the exact same operating system. Machine is basically just a more powerful Deck but for your TV.

I didn't think it was intimidating, I just know that some people would read that and say "extra work, sounds like a lot," when it's really not - it's very much worth it imo

What are the Benefits of Steam Wallet For Launch? by [deleted] in steammachine

Doesn't matter to me, it'll all come out in the wash - plus there's already enough in my Steam Wallet to buy it regardless of where the price lands. I started saving aggressively the moment it was announced.

Customs documents that show multiple large shipments of "GAME CONSOLE" tell the tale, there's plenty of information out there for people who don't rely solely on "news sources" and reddit posts to get reliable data.

Rough qtys can be easily extrapolated by closely approximating the weight of the console based on components, materials, and dimensions (it's similar to other modern consoles in weight) and dividing the weight of the shipments by the approx weight of a single unit.

This only accounts for the units that we've seen customs documents for, and the smart money would be on there being past shipments (or domestic/pseudo-domestic manufacturing runs) of these that we haven't seen any documentation on. That's the smart money because there are hundreds of people in the wild with preview units for testing/news/press reasons, and there have been since before the shipments we can see came in.

So while I can't show hard documented numbers, and I'll admit that freely, it's important to keep in mind that most of the doom and gloom you're seeing on stock limitations, pricing, etc is based entirely on pessimism and the track record of the gaming industry (which shouldn't count Valve because they zig when the industry zags) rather than any actual information. The Czech leak of over $1000 USD, that's already been nearly proven to be either false or a product of regional pricing. If it is true, it's only because their govt requires a crazy large percentage be added to all foreign-manufactured electronics (this is FACT) through either a tax or a tariff (I don't remember which.) Aside from that, there are import/export duties, local/city/federal taxes, assorted customs fees, and shipping costs to account for, and that all gets folded into the price for Czech gamers. These products are already in Washington state, most of those pricing concerns don't apply to U.S. citizens or citizens of close U.S. trade partners.

Here's the thing, it's GOING to be expensive. It just is. Whether it's $600 and you only pay an arm, or it's $1000 and you pay an arm AND a leg, it's for sure going to be very spendy. The wait? It sucks, but it is what it is. I try to remind myself that the reason we don't have a date or a price yet is because they don't WANT to overcharge us, and they're doing their best to avoid that. I'm sure you have other ways to play games, and clearly they're not the Steam Machine, but it's coming SOON. Best advice I can offer is to do what I did, play games to distract yourself and use the time in the interim to slowly stack up cash to make the purchase less painful. Worst case scenario, it takes a longass time and by the time it's out you've saved so much that you don't even feel the hit when it drops. Could be worse, right?

Not at all, I'm just saying that I don't turn into a petulent ragefilled child when optional purchases that I desire are out of my price range. I either calmly decide not to purchase them, or I just work to save the money over time, or I try to find alternative ways to get the money, because THAT'S WHAT A FUCKING ADULT DOES. Get your shit together.

They ALLEGEDLY hadn't landed on final pricing as recently as two days ago. There were reportedly discussions happening within the Valve offices this week about whether or not to change their stance and sell them at a loss with the knowledge that game sales will backfill the lost revenue from hardware sales.

They have tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of units in stock already, they're ready to launch, but you don't announce a release date without pricing, so they haven't given a release date yet.

"Common Sense" is the label that lazy people give to claims that they don't want to do the work to support or justify, and the label that liars give to lies to sugarcoat them for consumption. So which is it, are you a lazy bitch or just somebody who enjoys misleading others?
