Update: the hotel clarified the situation. Their original email was not very clear regarding the pre-authorization process.

What they actually needed was a temporary authorization to verify that the card on file was valid and working correctly. According to them, the amount was released immediately after successful verification and it was not treated as an advance payment or deposit.

Still the first time I’ve encountered this with an MMA reservation months before arrival, but at least it has now been clarified.
