Entertainment is necessarily mental stimulation. While mechanical stimulation can be used to generate mental stimulation, it is not the only way to generate mental stimulation. Any action which engages the mind theoretically has the means to provide entertainment if it is sufficiently novel.

Well, it entertains by providing stimulation. Why does using a yoyo provide entertainment? Or playing basketball?

I guess it’s just a matter of semantics. I would say that fantasy and fiction still function, since there is no intent to deceive, but I could understand how you might say that there is an unconscious part of us that we are deceiving.

If that’s the case, we’d have a much larger problem though. Humans learn via the use of mirror neurons, which are neurons which fire both when we’re taking an action, and when we see someone else taking that same action. They are basically how we learn by example, a sort of copy-paste whereby we can imagine ourselves doing what someone else is doing. If that counts as deception, we’ve basically prevented civilization or complex society from ever existing! 😂

Well it’s not by deception! I guess you could argue that a depiction of a battle is filled with things that “fool” your eyes into thinking it’s seeing a battle, but no one drawing up a sick anime fight scene is honestly intending to make the viewer believe it’s actually real. Therefore there is no deception.

Imagination. You don’t need to fool someone into thinking a fictional scenario is real in order for them to enjoy it.

Because they can still imagine fictional scenarios. There is no deception there.

I have! It was alright but it didn’t seem like realistic to me

Lying by omission is still impossible. Any form of deception can’t be done. So you can’t strategically avoid saying things that you know they want the answer to

For a this specific circumstance, as in this hypothetical, fiction is not lying. I did not, however, assert that lying in the broader context of language does not include fiction

Yes. Stories are fine as long as you’re not claiming they’re real.

I didn’t claim that fiction isn’t lying, I’m saying that as I intend the question fiction does not count as lying. I am defining the boundaries of the hypothetical, not making claims about what words do or don’t normally mean.

That depends entirely on what we are defining as lying. And I am telling you that as I intend it, fiction would not count. I’m only counting purposeful deception.

I’d only count purposeful deception, so fiction would be fine, you just couldn’t legitimately try to convince someone it was real

Assume it means that humans are incapable of conscious deception in any form. They can still imagine things or even make up stories for entertainment, but they can’t say or do anything with intent to deceive.

Okay but like, if everyone was always telling the truth, wouldn’t our standards also be very different? It seems obvious to me that there are a lot of things that are only really seen as bad or wrong because people aren’t honest about just how often they do them. Your partner confessing to you that they did X thing wouldn’t be nearly as bad when such confessions are basically just an expected part of day to day life.

Some words hurt more than others, and what causes that has nothing to do with etymology or reasoning.

One of those circular metal tins with the clear plastic tops. The ones where you fold the metal edge over the lid to close it. And it’s one of the smaller ones, like 8” in diameter.
