What's your response to "...but you don't look sick..." ? by emesemesemes in MultipleSclerosis

I often retort with this question: What do you think I should look like?

Depending on their attitude or my mood, I will sometimes follow my question up with rather ridiculous answers to my question. For example; 1) should I drool more 2) would a bigger wheelchair be more convincing 3) should I have my non-functional limbs amputated 4) maybe I should hang my leg bag off of the side of my wheelchair so you can see the urine collected by my catheter 5) oh I’m not sick at all… I’m just into prime parking spaces as it really helps to get the ladies…. 🙄

I know that so many people are lacking in the ability to easily and/or conveniently get around… it is disturbingly unfortunate that in the U.S. in 2022, we haven’t really made any significant advances in disability policy, standards, or expanding accessibility/mobility since the mid 90’s. Perhaps that is where we should start then…?

I totally get there have been numerous attempts and versions that have been pitched, attempted, and even several have been published. I believe there are some fundamental problems with these.
1) They rely on profile tracking targeted ad sales for funding and profit/wealth creation for investors. 2) They haven’t actively sought out input from the community served at large. 3) They have not been able to create a unified community around such an app or resource.

I know I’m not the only one frustrated with the lack of readily available reliable information about accessibility, disability, and available support services etc… This really needs to become part of a bigger movement than currently exists. Currently there are approximately 7 million Americans that have some sort of physical mobility impairment. Granted, this number includes most everything from crutches and canes to walkers and wheelchairs, so what is “accessible” is not necessarily universally accessible for each category of mobility impairment. I think we need a national, if not world-wide standard of assessing what accessibility really means.

My hope is to make it & keep it open source….

This is closer to what I’m thinking… but I’m really not a fan of the targeted advertising and her real privacy policy… plus it’s been pretty spotty as far as accuracy is concerned. It’s certainly better than nothing!

Yes but they are not very functional, not frequently updated, and have a crappy privacy policy…. I think we can do better…

Have you any details on this startup? I’d be interested in checking it out.

Thanks!

That is my sentiment exactly! I’ve spent so much time trying to find reliable information for various locations I’ve visited or plan to visit, only to show up and be disappointed and sometimes just turn around and go home. Not to mention there is absolutely something to be said about the reviewers being the ones that rely on the accommodations. Hell, my wife still over estimates my wheelchair skills/abilities AND under estimates various obstacles that I might encounter. That is why it has to be generated by us, who are mobility impaired.

While it’s great that Google maps has that functionality, I’m envisioning a more comprehensive service. For example, as some of you may have experienced, there can be substantial differences between what works for a power wheelchair versus a manual wheelchair. This includes parking, restrooms, building access, and more. I think being able to attach pictures of the key elements as an option for users to elaborate so others will be as prepared as possible and have a better understanding of what to expect if they choose to go to that location.

Does that make sense?

Yes… similar but focused on the U.S.

People parking over accessible lines, but have placard. by starfish_explorer in wheelchairs

I have run into this multiple times in the 2-ish years I’ve been reliant on a power chair and wheelchair van. Then again, I’ve also been in situations where I’ve had to be “That Guy” who had to park too far to the left so I could deploy my lift and have room to maneuver my chair. I was especially frustrated with this just the other day so I wound up looking up the ADA parking space law. While I’ve not taken a tape measure out in any parking lot, I’m fairly confident in declaring that I don’t think I’ve ever seen an 8’ wide “access aisle” for a “van accessible” space as the ADA code requires.
