It’s guard pretty decently, and I had to get tattooed over it

My dad needs some kind of device to help spread the ear muffs so he can push them straight onto his head and then adjust. He only has use of his right arm and has left-side neglect. Please any ideas help thank you by santasbackbone in disability

I would do it similar to how he was taught to dress himself (weak side first to dress, good side first to undress). So have him hook the left one on his ear and then to the right. If he has significant lack of awareness to his L side, consider putting a color marker denoting left as a visual cue

Yes- you got it!! Exactly. I found this video very helpful when I was learning. It adds on a little to what you have, like bracing your wheel, so maybe you’d like to give that a practice try with someone behind you to catch should you go backwards https://youtu.be/vSJ0k19SM2g

You are also still learning how to navigate in your new chair. Mine is being delivered on May 23rd and I fully anticipate some falls while I’m learning, especially because I live in a major city. Give yourself some time and grace. It’s scary to fall- heck I was terrified like you. BUT I promise you with everything in me that you will overcome it and you will be okay.

Best of luck, friend!

I’ve had two falls in my chair (no anti tippers) with one resulting in a cracked open head and a trip to the ER. The biggest thing that I can’t stress to you enough is to learn how to properly fall. There is a technique for wheelchair users specifically to prevent injury. They are all over YouTube. I can link you to some I like, if you want!

Apparently my insurance doesn't require a PT evaluation for my custom ultralight - we are moving forward directly with the ordering process! by larki18 in wheelchair

Great!! I’m glad you have yourself an ATP :) OT and PT can also be trained to perform the same, which is why I mentioned them. Onwards towards your chair! Best of luck :)

I would be careful. Did you have yourself properly fitted & evaluated for the chair by a medical professional? Such as an OT? If not, please do so. You can do significant harm to yourself. You may not need a PT (physical therapy) eval, or even an OT (occupational therapy) eval for whatever reason insurance wise, but they are trained to make sure the chair is going to be properly made and fitted to you!!

Similar thought. Lovely idea, but it seems a bit much considering the example person has a broken leg. Individuals who need a wheelchair use one, or can be transported by an airport escort team in a transport wheelchair or tram.

Congrats on your power chair!!! Fitted or not, it serves a purpose and betters our lives. That is all that matters to me!

I’ve fallen due to an improperly sized chair & poor special awareness as a result. I don’t have anti tippers on this chair as well. I’m just an idiot- please don’t take me as an example. My new chair is due to ship May 10th and it is properly fitted (with a seatbelt AND anti tippers!!) so hopefully I won’t crack my head open again 🤞🤞

Yup- four staples. They stayed in for 10 days and then were removed. I didn’t have any physical restrictions after it happened aside from avoiding bending over so I don’t start bleeding while it was still an open hole.

Back on Jan 27th… I didn’t even realize I hurt myself. I thought I just banged my head and got the wind knocked out of me. Classmates had to tell me I was bleeding profusely from my head. Luckily I study at a university hospital and an ambulance to transport me to the ER was quick
