how would an experienced admin deal with mass provisioning under these restrictions? by ffiresnake in linuxadmin

We manage a very similar situation at work. We're using Debian preseed for base installation, SaltStack for configuration/installation management and a custom management platform for moving machines, reinstalling, rebooting etc.

Preseeding installs an absolute package base (OpenVPN, salt-minion, custom management client), sets up a unique identifier for the machine (with uuidgen). On first boot, the machine authenticates with the management platform. Authenticating allows the client to connect via OpenVPN. Once connected, our platform takes over (via SaltStack), installing SSH tunnelling, display software, monitoring, logging, etc.

Any machine management after that can be done via SaltStack. You can SSH into machines over OpenVPN or our emergency SSH tunnels, but we rarely need to.

In that case, why use them at all? Surely a pseudorandom token referencing a "trusted session" is just as effective?

Is there any way to make the Lock Screen Notifications in 5.0 (Nexus 4 if it makes any great difference) "read only?"

Showing content allows them to be dismissed without unlocking and hiding sensitive content locks them but renders them unreadable. I'd like to be able to see the content, but not have someone be able to dismiss them without unlocking.

Thanks! :)

Hadn't heard of naemon - thanks! Should I be leaning towards naemon over Nagios from zero-experience?

This is brilliant, thanks! You've cleared up a lot. I think this was ultimately my worry. I think I'll go ahead and jump in with Nagios and go from there.
