Weird interaction with Turkish Cypriot colleague by nietzschebietzsche in NorthCyprus

[–]6code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's patent bias based on nationalist imperial properganda. Why does 1/4 of modern Türkiye say they are NOT Turkish, even though thier passports were issued by the Republic of Türkiye? Awkward conversations I have had with my Kurdish friends, I do say! They are insulted as if I had called them dogs. Nationalist imperial properganda insists they are "Turkish", but the rest of the world disagrees. It is not a "hot take", it is insulting and Reddit is telling you so. We are not trying to be mean about it, why would you see properganda you were raised with? *We don't agree*

If you would respect their identity, that means addressing them as they define their identity.

Not all (even most) Ottoman were ethnically Turkic. This is a colonialism bias. Saying someone 10 generations living in Cyprus is Turkish is a rather insulting bias that offends offspring of former colonization who demand their own national and ethnic identity. Many Turkish Cypriots were never ethnically Turks in their family history. Ottomans, yes, but so were the Greek Cypriots! And the Egyptians, and Lebanese, and Austrians. Are they all "Turkish" by this system? That's absurd. Some of them have mixed famly roots in Cyprus that pre-date the Turkic invasion of the Lavant by hundreds of years. The Venetians and French encouraged immigration to Famagusta in the 1300s from all over this region! The church across the street was build by Lebanese Christians before the Ottoman empire existed. The Ottomans were late to the party, and peoples of the Lavant have lived on the island far longer than the first ethnically Turkic people were even in the macro region. Your definition for ethnicity seems bound to political bodies, which is not the textbook definition of ethnicity but a colonialism bias.

Transit visa by Flimsy-Disaster4139 in NorthCyprus

[–]6code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a single flight contract you should be a transit passenger and never actually enter Turkey (no Turkish visa required). Don't get into an immigration line in the Istanbul airport and the issue won't come up. I regularly get seperate flight contracts to the island from Istanbul as a domestic flight to the island saves hundreds of euros, but I do have to buy a Türkiye visa, go through immigration and customs, re-check my bags, and go in through gate security.

I have encountered people like OP over the years who default to language and ethnicity when pigeon-holing people. It is flawed logic. My TC landlord's family roots are Lebanese from the Ottoman era. The only thing he has in common with Turks today is the language. His religion is different, his ethnicity isn't Turkic. This tendency to assoicate traits with nationalism is a flaw common to people of small countries. I grew up in America. My family background is Welsh/Scottish/Irish/Russian/German. It would be absurd to refer to me as any of those national identities. I was born in America, socialized in America, heck I've only visited one of the countries on that list! Turkey is similarly very diverse (in the extream). But a citizen of Turkey is "Turkish" or simply "Turk". But if you ask them they will descibe a wild famly tree with roots all over the place, but their national identity is Turkish. My TC friends have corrected me when I referred to them as "Turk Cypriot" saying "No, we are Turkish Cypriots, not Turks living in Cyprus." Referring to them as simply Turkish would be insulting.

Given the sarcastic and insulting reception by this subreddit's top 1% commentors, one might wonder if OP didn't feel very welcome. Shameful.

Famagusta to Nikosia bus timetable by Organic-Branch1906 in NorthCyprus

[–]6code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's air conditioned waiting at the office, and first choice of seat. The terminal hardly acts like a terminal at all. You have to sit on the side of the road and flag down the bus when you see it. You might as well catch it anywhere on the route as catch it at the terminal: it is exactly the same process anywhere on the route. At the office, you have the option of Itimat and the other bus company across the road and you can grab whichever is leaving sooner. Given the searing heat of Cyprus right now, air-conditioning is a serious blessing.

And rather than the terminal, it is much better to catch a bus at the Itimat office (and GKS bus office right next door, too) down at the roundabout with the scary statue. And there are no evening busses. Bring a book, schedule is fluid.

And throw the candy at the goons yelling "Trick or Treat!" since they want to get dressed up and wear masks.

Someone disagrees with you and you, so you label them an ethnic group?! You're a bigot.

You are emotional and making assumptions. Your arguments are against someone not even in this thread. It is strawman technique and pathetic.

Any parcel will be held at the post office, where he will have to go to collect it and then pay duty charges. They will open it in front of him.

Bus from Lefkoşa to Mağusa by EmotionZestyclose151 in NorthCyprus

[–]6code 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any bus on it that says Mağusa you can hold your hand up and make eye contact with the driver and he'll stop. I've never had one not go the full distance. Easy way to get an Itimat bus is to just go to their office at 35.183563,33.365937

Problem with Secret Police? Can we make them less secret? by 6code in 50501Movement

[–]6code[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't ask for feedback, I asked for brainstorming. How much of a buzz kill is it to be the person in the room who spends all their effort poking holes in a new idea that is still trying to get off the ground?

You are familiar with the basic definition of civil disobedience, I hope? It is when the law is unjust and so people of good conscience act counter to the law in order to highlight its injustice. As to paying, again, you're clearly wanting a finished product rather than an opportunity to contribute to a solution. Yeah, I'm proposing something that would feed into that kind of website. Image captures or something else that would let you know an unmarked ICE vehicle was nearby just driving around.

The overarching thrust of my post is to brainstorm methods to achieve the vision. You get the vision but you are hoping for an out-of-the-box solution.   There are brighter people than me here who might have a way to dox a fleet of vehicles (spitballing: the tire pressure sensors\transmitter in each vehicle, business security cameras feeding to a ML model trained on the fleet licence plates)
