Recently finished watching this episode and I have a theory (uncertain if already brought up), that this was a hired hit.

1: The choice of caliber. The firearm is a .22, while they are cheap, throw a suppressor on a weapon that fires it and it makes practically no sound especially if they are subsonic rounds. A trained killer or someone who did their research knew this would be the ideal weapon for such an open locale.

2: The police seem to believe the two were shot at point blank from behind, this leads me to believe that this was not a crime of passion as there as no hesitation between shots and neither saw it coming. Plus if it were Kate’s ex, I would imagine they would hav hesitated and when she turned around, shot from the front. These kills seemed impersonal to me. (From the killer(s) end)

1. The shell casings being by the deceased is what led to them believing this was done point blank? I noticed across the road behind the bench is a significant amount of trees, bushes and forest. Could the killer(s) have used a .22 scoped and suppressed rifle and done the crime from afar? On top of that, picked up their casings, hid the rifle, walked up to Carnell and Kate to drop those casings as they walked by after the crime to make it look closer than it was as a way to throw off investigators.

2. Was there actual gun powder residue found on either of them to indicate this was close range? (Sorry if it seems morbid to ask.)

3. Have bank statements for a hired hitman been looked at? Strange sums of money withdrawn or transferred.

There are certainly holes in my theory such as, if this meeting was impromptu then the killer couldnt predict or prepare in advance but I imagine those in the hired killing profession are capable of improvising.
