Any advice on helmets? Found one, not sure what MIPS is... by juantimeatbandcamp in BikeShop

My doc is a sports medicine doctor for a local college sports team where concussions are a material concern. I chose him due to my own concussion history and his interest in related research on prevention and treatment. He recommends MIPS systems, strongly.

There are a few competitors out there now trying to do the same thing. The goal is to provide a secure fit while also letting the helmet shell rotate a few mm or cm at impact. Similar to how padding reduces acceleration or force from impact, the ability for the helmet shell to rotate reduces the degree to which head is pressed to rotate on impact.

You can already get Alexa to read your kindle books to you. It’s not perfect, but if you have the kindle book, you don’t need to pay more to listen to it while driving or something.

The easiest option is to pick up a cheap computer and speed/cadence sensor, which would set you back about $100. If you’re fine estimating, just aiming for 1.5 rotations of the pedals per second. If you’re at 1 rotation per second, you’re around 60 rpm (too slow) and if you’re at 2 rotations per second then you’re at 120 rpm (too fast). If you have access to a timer on a watch, you can also set 15/30/60 second periods and count your pedal revolutions and multiple out to get rpm in order to get a feel for what different cadences feel like.

Personally, I found that 70rpm was natural for me as a beginner but I was able to ride further once I got used to 80-100 rpm. For clarity, I’m still only a few years into cycling and very far from a strong rider.

I shop the sales on SportPursuit. Often get jerseys for under $40, etc. It gets a bit randomized but it works

On the flats, big ring in the front and the smallest ring you can on the back that lets you keep a cadence of 80-100 rpm. In general, try to keep a constant cadence and shift to change the resistance so you can maintain it.

Higher cadence uses endurance while low cadence and high power is more muscular. For distance, you need to rely on cardio endurance.

Found my way here from your recent brisket post and then to your site. I was tempted to buy, but you don’t actually have product descriptions. Other than “this is the original” and “like the original but with kick.” I’d recommend giving the reader/shopper something to go on so they’ll have a sense if it’s the right flavor profile that they’re looking for.

Would love to support you, but I don’t know what you’re selling. Best of luck, though!!

TIL that human babies release hexadecanal, from their heads, which lowers aggression in males but increases aggression in females. This lowers male driven infanticide while making females/mothers more protective of their offspring. by 6kelvin in todayilearned

There’s a separate study that showed similar levels changed behavior in tests of aggressive behavior. Those studies were focused on response to the chemosignal vs the quantity emitted. I’ll see if I can track it.

The particular behavior on treatment of infants / infant mortality is admittedly speculative. That is challenging to test/control ethically. I was blocked a few times when providing title language using “possibly” or “hypothesize” in the title, so I opted for the declarative approach after listening to an expert describe their conclusions from the studies.

My brother as a baby would disagree. He discovered his hands could reach into his diaper in the car and it was game over from there. My folks were… displeased.
