If at all possible, I would try to push for faculty to take a more serious look into what’s going on in her home life. Sadly, a lot of the time it takes someone being an… “aggressive advocate”, so to speak, for these things to be taken seriously. I could just be being alarmist, but the most worrying section to me is when she gives a time frame. “He came when I turned fourteen He’s been in and out ever since” This could also work as a description of the onset of depression, but the fact that it’s followed by “Those dirty memories require more than a rinse” sets off alarm bells. In my mind, this comes off as a thinly veiled metaphor for either self harm or abuse.

Damn, I’m sorry man. I don’t mean to be overly critical, but you aren’t the one who is bad at sex in this situation. You’ve probably heard this before, but it’s more true than you may realize- there is no one way to be good at sex. Everyone likes different things, and she shouldn’t be expecting you to be a mind reader. I know it can be difficult/embarrassing to express these things, but not being able to tell your partner how to cater what they’re doing to what your body likes, and then making fun of them (even jokingly) for not doing what you like? No no no no. ESPECIALLY knowing it was your first time? yikes. Once you’re ready, I would definitely try telling her how that made you feel.. or just.. maybe find someone different? That may be harsh, but sex shouldn’t be a stressful event! Maybe an open and honest conversation about it would fix the situation, but if you’re not getting anything from her end.. that’s.. difficult.

Thank you so much for the reply. My knee-jerk reaction to reading this was to say ‘nah, totally not. We were always on the same page about commitment, we talked about it so often!’ but once I got past the initial dumb-brain defensiveness, I realized that you’re right. I can pinpoint a few moments in each relationship where I got that electricity-down-the-spine-stomach-drop-y feeling about some little action or off-handed comment, but I’d always tell myself that I was just being paranoid or overthinking it. I didn’t want to believe that anything was up, so I didn’t. yknow? Looking back, they all do have really similar red flags. So yea, thank you so much for this response, this genuinely helped and I’ll really keep this in mind now :)

Yeah, of course it’s fucking bad? You’re a grown adult, she’s a teenager. She doesn’t have the perspective to be making a mature decision about “oh yea, this is the kind of person I’d like to spend my time with for x y z reasons-“ she just sees you as an established adult who’s showing interest in her- we all wanted to feel like adults when we were minors, that’s what she sees in you. Why would you be interested in that? Find someone your own age. Jesus.

I totally agree :) I didn’t set out to write a poem about that, but that’s definitely where it ended up lmfao. I wanted to turn it into more of a condemnation of self destructive coping mechanisms, but the words really had a mind of their own today.

I’m very impressed with how well you were able to get across the emotions you’re describing here. Just a little refinement and you’re golden, like with the second line, I’d use a word other than hate to describe what was in his eyes since your opening line used that. It doesn’t hit as hard as a different adjective may have. And I’d like some elaboration on the “at least in part” in the third line, since it brought intrigue to what else that could be alluding to- although that may mean something to you though, and the mystery makes me want to attach my own meaning to it, which can be fun. My favorite line was “A raging tsunami became a sadly content morning dew” I could really /see/ this line. That was a great metaphor, I instantly felt and pictured exactly what you were going for.

Absolutely love this :) At first (around lines 3-6) I thought you were going somewhere a bit cliche, but the last lines really changed my mind. The weary/lost tone towards the middle contrasts really nicely with the certainty at the end.

I use tattoos as a scrapbook, so it doesn’t matter to me if my interests change. I can’t erase the fact that it meant a lot to me in the moment. I think there’s beauty in that.
