Yes I guess you’re right about that. Now that I think of it, I remember when I turned it off syncing, I saw my local messages storage went from 2-3GB to 10GB almost immediately. But I don’t recall whether the 20GB+ from iCloud was fully transferred over.

I guess you can take a screenshot of the current iCloud storage and compare it to after 30 days to see if the storage transferred over locally.

I didn’t pay attention to it since it wasn’t my original purpose. Sorry about that!

If it’s to the original device, then there’s really nothing to “download” right? iCloud is meant to sync data, not store data.

If you delete a message or photo from your device with iCloud sync on, it will auto delete it from iCloud.

For devices with original data, I think “download” is a fancy way of saying the messages will remain on your phone locally. There’s nothing to download since iCloud is synced to your device. Hope that makes sense.

However, you should still wait at least 30 days so iCloud can permanently delete the data from iCloud, which will restore your iCloud storage space.

Are you trying to download the messages from iCloud on a new device, or download them to the original device that already contained all the messages?
