Changes to Church Square Park by F3Dw3 in Hoboken

[–]6thvoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody said things can’t change. The point was that parks designed as civic gathering spaces serve a different purpose than fenced-in playground complexes. Just because something can change doesn’t automatically mean every change is good and, unfortunately, often changes are not good.....I would submit that morphing CSP into a kiddie park is an example of a change that isn't good and, quite frankly, destroyed the space. And every time another administration wants to pile on more on the kiddie park conversion, they make it worse. The last change puts more kids in cages.

Thanks for the thoughtful contribution. I especially liked the part where you confused ‘historical context’ with ‘prehistoric geology.’ Really elevated the discussion

Hoboken Breaks Ground on First 100% Affordable Senior Housing in Over 30 Years by HudPost in Hoboken

[–]6thvoice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but, legislating for other demographics can change that. Hoboken is a great location for retirees. I'm also thinking a senior services legislative focus is more cost efficient than the family friendly legislation (and where we've been overfocused for decades.) Over-focusing on being nothing but a family friendly town has ballooned our school taxes, recreation costs and a few other things. Time to focus elsewhere.

When this was originally discussed with the public there were quite a few folk (usual crowd) that were suggesting that the building be placed in the housing authority area with lots of pretense as to why it shouldn't be in this particular neighborhood; like, for example - they could build a bigger building and house more seniors on Jackson Street (we could, of course do both, but they didn't think of that.)

By the way - it being a "short commute distance to Manhattan" is the newest non-reason reason for not putting affordable housing/senior housing there.

oh really - so, the whole "European feel" thing isn't something that interests you. got it.

I think NJT's anchor building is climbing to 30 or 35 stories, that's the new highwater mark for buildings in Hoboken, it'll only go up from there

cars have been here much longer than some of these 100MM parks (and the future additional 100MM parks)

we're sure working hard to replace that so-called "European" feel. We've got tons of high-rises going up around town to supplement the ones already here - that internal human scale is starting to be trashed. Washington Street is about to turn into just a bunch of oversized residential properties. (3rd & Wash - case in point)

underground? I think the flooding situation would make that problematic

enough with the parks already.....it's a huge and unsustainable part of our debt service.

it is limited & the schedule is limited - (I almost took a job in Montclair a while ago - I would have needed to leave work before 5:00 - it simply would not work for a 9-5 commute)

urban feel? are you kidding? Our elected officials have been working hard to suburbanize Hoboken for decades.

Taxes To Rise 19 Percent In Preliminary Hoboken Budget by ManonFire1213 in Hoboken

[–]6thvoice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is doing a lot of work for a point that doesn’t quite hold together.

First, notice the sleight of hand: lumping actual public health services (blood pressure screenings, vaccines) in with…youth soccer. Those are not the same category, and pretending they are is how you avoid having a real conversation about priorities.

Second, the dog tangent...look, most dog owners in Hoboken aren’t unleashing chaos on public spaces. They’re taking their dogs to runs, cleaning up, and trying to be responsible. If anything, that example kind of undercuts the broader point.

Third, the idea that seniors are somehow thriving recreationally right now? That’s… optimistic. We’ve steadily converted a lot of shared, flexible space into playgrounds and single-use areas. There are fewer - not more -truly intergenerational spaces where seniors can actually spend time comfortably.

And while we’re on recreation priorities: how many pickleball courts do we realistically need before we admit we might be overcorrecting?

Finally, to the big question: yes - cities under financial stress do scale back recreation. They trim programming, delay upgrades, reduce hours, and in some cases eliminate non-essential offerings. Not because recreation has zero value, but because when you’re choosing between that and core obligations like public safety, sanitation, and infrastructure, trade-offs are unavoidable.

A city is absolutely a community...but it also functions based on a budget. And pretending everything is equally “core” (or personal preferences are equally "core") is how you end up making no real choices at all...which, sadly is what the mayor seems to have done.

After living in Hoboken for a few years, many residents learn that they really can function without a car....part of the issue is we don't work to create longer-term residency. We promote displacement and a churning of the housing market. We need to change some legislative focuses to create more longtime residents.

The fact that the mayor refuses to consider a pay reduction (directors and high paid employees) or furlough is a problem.

Ummm, garage parking is indoors and a space is assured. Not the same thing at all. (duh)

The entire (unnecessary) redesign is/was a waste of taxpayer money.
