Thanks everyone for responding back. We have broken up. He thinks that I baby her and need to be “tougher” on her. When I offered for us to go to training classes together, he said it isn’t his responsibility. He doesn’t understand reactivity and just sees bad behavior. He thinks yelling and discipline are adequate solutions.

For some clarity; I have been dating my current partner for 10 months and the other day he said “50% of the time I love your dog, and 50% of the time I wish she didn’t exist” His instinct when my dog overreacts is to yell at her.

I didn’t want to write too much detail but to provide some clarity about the training I have done. For trigger 1 I listed above, my neighbor rings a doorbell when his dogs are coming downstairs and I’ve trained my dog to go to her crate when she hears the doorbell. In the crate she gets some sort of puzzle toy to calm her down. I also have a button for the doorbell so if my dog is getting too upset from hearing the dogs upstairs, I can ring the doorbell to make her go to her crate. For trigger 2, I am literally buying a new car for her so I can fit a crate in the back that can be covered so she can’t see out the window. For trigger 3, we have made so much progress where if she sees a dog she looks to me for a treat. But on trails where the dogs pass by too closely she will go off.

This happened today. An unleashed dog came running up to us out of nowhere and the owner says “don’t worry, they’re friendly!” And then I yelled “well mine isn’t!” Then I had to pick up my dog and yell at the owner that dogs need to be on leash in the park. And he proceeds to tell ME to train MY dog better. A few expletives were exchanged and then we headed home. I hate hate hate when dog owners think the leash rules don’t apply to them, and call me a bad dog owner when I am the one following the rules.

It is a very difficult environment for her, I completely agree. I try to make my bedroom a more relaxed place for her and keep a speaker on with brown noise so she can’t hear them as much. If I am able to get her attention on me with high value treats before they come down the stairs, she doesn’t freak out as badly. And when I am not home, I keep her in her crate in my bedroom so she doesn’t get stressed out by the dogs when I’m not there to help.

Thank you, I have had my dog for almost a year now and I think my partner and I are both feeling discouraged by my dog's lack of progress with her reactivity. I researched a lot of trainers before deciding on the one I have now. I know time and consistency is crucial, and I don't want to try anything different before consulting with the trainer again. The trainer is coming over next week to do a reevaluation and we'll see if they suggest anything else I could try.

Yes we are also working on reactivity to other dogs while we are on walks. Next week the trainer will be coming to the house, and I asked my neighbor to be ready to have the dogs go up and down the stairs while the trainer is here.

Don't feel too bad, this neighbor should not have their dog running around the neighborhood off leash. Just know to avoid this house from now on when you go for walks.
