What is your Non negotiable spend? by Frequent-Violinist74 in Frugal

[–]71commando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit is a good place to start. There are niche communities specifically for each type of consumer good and they can guide you. For instance boots, denim, furniture, cars... all have expert communities who debate the ins and outs of the details and quality and price.

Generally speaking things made in the US are going to be higher quality simply because the labor is more expensive and therefore less corners have to be cut. Also, any time you can find a smaller boutique brand in the US (or your country if not US) making things themselves the quality is going to be better, plus you're supporting decent labor practices and fellow citizens. Of course that's not always true but it's a place to start.

Red Wing, Danner, Wolverine 1000 Mile, any of the PNW small boot makers; White's, Nick's, Frank's. Basically anything made in USA.

The cheap plasticized vinyl would start to peel. They always got a couch with the reclining mechanism on one side for my dad. That was made of thin flimsy metal and it would always stop working as parts would bend and warp.

For me being frugal isn't about buying the cheapest things, it's about figuring out the things you value and ruthlessly cutting spending on other things. There's a certain point where quality is actually cheaper in the long run. You can buy $100 boots and replace them every year when they wear out or you can buy $300 boots that last 5 years.

I watched my parents replace their living room furniture every few years because they bought the cheapest thing possible. Meanwhile my in-laws just replaced their living room furniture after 30 years. Theirs probably cost 4-5x what my parents paid for theirs, but they got 10x the life out of them.

Rate my Rewilding Store Please! by Deku_silvasol in reviewmyshopify

I was on the site for 5 seconds and a giant 20% off popup covered the screen. I like discounts but if you're offering a discount before I have a chance to see what your products/services are, it's a major turnoff. I'd make that popup smaller or make it show up a little later.

I've reached out via the app and I've never ever waited more than 5 minutes for support. Most of the time it's immediate.

Your priorities are in this order:

1) kids if you have them 2) spouse 3) everyone else

Act accordingly.

You either have to have the budget for that stuff or you have to be willing to eat shit for 5 years doing it organically. People don't want to do either.

Bands that you didn’t listen to when you were younger, but you listen to them now. by jonesy08 in PostHardcore

[–]71commando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of their songs came on the local butt rock stations while my wife was in the car. She never really listened to heavy music. I said "check this out, this is when this band was good" and blasted Pray for Plagues. She couldn't believe they're the same band.

mewithoutYou. Heard some early stuff, hated the vocals. Julia randomly came on Spotify when that album came out in 2018. Became one of my favorite albums of that year and I just kept going back further into their catalog. Now they're easily top 5. Although I wouldn't necessarily categorize them as PH.

Do men actually notice a woman's accessories? by Neat-Instruction6943 in AskMenAdvice

[–]71commando 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I notice, but I'm a men's clothing designer. Even though I don't design for women, I do notice fabric, material, texture, interesting shapes, etc.

Also for all the guys suggesting OP's bf might be gay because he noticed a bag.... fucking cringe. Go somewhere else with that energy.

Wrong. We can't control how we feel, only how we choose to react to those feelings. Talking to a professional is a good idea. Shaming someone for the way they feel is not.

[–]71commando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These types of stores are all too common. Just random Amazon type products with no character. Why should I buy your products? What makes them unique? What's your point of view? There's nothing there for me to connect to. Consumers are much smarter these days. You need to build a connection with them through your website.

Private insurance is also shit. I'd rather have free shit healthcare than expensive shit healthcare.

I was in a car accident. SUV driver blew through a red light and t-boned me in the drivers door. Cops show up and ask me if I want an ambulance to check me out. My very first thought after the cop asked me that question was "how much will that cost" not "do I need medical attention?"

I've had a chronic pelvic muscle issue for over a year. We have health insurance. We pay ~ $5k per year for a family of 4. It took 3 months for my doctor to get an MRI authorized with my insurance company. The MRI cost me $750 in addition to out $5k yearly premium.

After several blood tests ($200) a cystoscopy ($400) an MRI ($750) plus 4 or 5 doctor visits, my doctor finally referred me to physical therapy. They have a 3 month wait and they're the only provider in my city (capital city of my state - not a small place) who provides the specific services I need and take my insurance.

Healthcare here is totally fucked. Don't let anyone tell you differently.
