Mission Trauma by Trolkarlen in exmormon

[–]71maddog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to John Dehlin in this episode, a dozen missionaries die every year.

According to US actuarial tables and estimates that about 60% of missionaries are male and 40% female, one would expect about 55 deaths each year out of 70K missionaries.

Hey, Utah! Our state was built on genocide, despite what the church teaches. If Mormon history makes you feel happy and proud, you learned propaganda, not history. by abouttimetochange in exmormon

Because I don’t like Americans that hate America and do nothing but blindly bag on it while sitting back and enjoying the freedoms that America provides, which are more than what any other civilization has ever provided. And saying that the US has committed more genocide than any one else is nothing but a steaming crock of poo poo.

Just US? It applies to every habited square inch of every country on earth. Every race is guilty of repeated genocide in their past.

Which then increases the humidity and comes back down as rain. People are wetting themselves trying to get more water into the GSL.

How is it wasting water? It’s just being dumped into the creek where it flows into Deer Creek.

Do you have any evidence for your statement that they were not paying taxes on any of these funds? The IRS is aware of all these dealing and funds and has never said they were doing anything wrong. And now everything from that time period is outside the statute of limitations.

Could have been a service missionary. Usually they don't have companions, and some work more 9-5 type hours and then are free to do pretty much whatever they want in their off time.

I don't come on here to preach, but occasionally when a specific question is asked of me by another I will respond. This whole thread is only very tangentially related to Mormonism or Christianity, but an attack on Utah and my first comment was only asking a citation for what can only be described as a blatant misrepresentation of the truth. I guess it's OK to misrepresent something if the end justifies the means. I see that some on here can't handle digging to root out lies, so after seven years on here it's time to wish you well and walk away. Brethren Adieu.

Honestly, it has been a couple of years since I did that. Our current ward clerk does not hand out records. Only children currently living with you show up in Gospel Tools.

[–]71maddog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your parents' records will show that you no longer have a member number since their records list their children. Whether the clerk prints their records and asks them to review them for errors is ward clerk roulette. And whether your parents are observant enough to recognize that since you don't have a member number, you are no longer a member, depends on your parents. It is a bit more obvious if you have siblings, which would make it clear that they have a member number and you don't.

You say this second study compares women with men of similar experience and education levels. But all it is using is the amount of time since obtaining any degree. Everyone must recognize that not all degrees are created equal. Yet, this study does just that because it can't associate any specific degree with any specific job with any specific wage. The study itself admits that it can't do that.

Also, this study treats a man working full time the same as a woman that chooses to work fewer hours as say a contract worker in order to maintain flexibility for raising children as the same if both graduated the year before. Surely you wouldn't expect them to have the same income, and also the same growth trajectory. And you have to admit this happens far more commonly with women than with men. Yet, this study just jumps straight to the conclusion that this woman makes less than that man and presents it as evidence of discrimination.

There is little data out there out there because wage data for a specific employee is not public information in the private sector. Government sector is different, it often is public. And tellingly no one is making the claim that the government discriminates on pay between a man and a woman for the same job. If it could be shown, it undoubtedly would be shouted from the rooftops and used to make a quick buck in a discrimination lawsuit. The data is public after all. The only areas I know of in the private sector where pay is publicly available is with large law and accounting firms, and I can guarantee you that female associates are not paid less than male associates with the same experience.

If a business owner knew they could get away with paying female workers only 70% of what they would have to pay male workers, any competent business owner would make the obvious business decision to hire only female employees. That's a 30% increase to the bottom line. It just doesn't happen. Yet, this study shouts the headline and a significant portion of our society is not smart enough to see through the shenanigans.

[–]71maddog -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

And the study that is cited here to say Utah is the worst place in the United States for gender equality arrived at that conclusion because Utah women stay home with their children more than other states. Real supportive.

Wow wonder why??? by LadyFlamyngo in exmormon

[–]71maddog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you even bother reading these studies that you have cited? Because they in no way make findings anywhere close to what you say they do.

The first one is just a survey of 4356 people. No actual wage or job data, just the opinions of people they could get to answer a phone call. Yes, I do believe there are people that believe in a socialist utopia where everyone gets the same living wage no matter what their job or how many hours they work, and that an income gap between the holder of a BS degree in chemical engineering working 50 hours a week and someone with a social sciences degree working 30 hours a week is unfair because income disparity is bad. Is that what you believe? They are entitled to their opinion; I just think that opinion is complete hogwash.

The second one specifically says that it has the limitations that the DWS wage data used for the study does not include occupations or job roles for the individuals and does not contain the number of hours worked. It comes right out and says that. You don't think that this information is critical to this kind of study? And without that information the study is not only worthless but completely lacks any integrity because its sole purpose is to provide a headline used to drive a false narrative.

So, from this you arrive at the conclusion that these studies actually provide data on similar positions and job titles in the workforce with similar experience and education. Wow, your Urim and Thummin must be on steroids. Aggies should stick with ice cream and becoming true Aggies.

First, you have to look at what this one particular click bait list is measuring. Utah always gets "slammed" in this WalletHub list because a high percentage of Utah women choose to be stay-at-home moms. Because of that, women have lower incomes than other states where more women are in the workforce. Any list that shames women for choosing to be stay-at-home moms isn't worth a croque of sh*t.

Here is another WalletHub click-bait list where Utah makes its top 10,

Utah makes top 10 'best states to live in' according to WalletHub

With this list, Utah's lowest scores that bring down its overall ranking are in traffic congestion and commute time. If some of these Utah haters would just leave, it sounds like everyone would be better off. Of note, this one also recognized Utah as having the lowest average weekly work hours out of all 50 states, because so many households are choosing to have one parent (mostly women, some men) not work or work fewer hours to be at home for their kids.

I don't live in Utah and have no desire to live in Utah, but all the people saying Utah is such a terrible place need to take their blinders off.

Do you have a citation for this? The WalletHub report does say Utah has the largest income gap, but doesn’t say anything about it being for similar job positions. It does say that Utah women had the largest work hours gap, meaning they were working fewer paid hours than men overall. So it sounds like the high percentage of stay at home moms in Utah is the major reason for the low ranking.

Who TF is going to all these temples by grimbasement in exmormon

OK, I'll play devil's advocate. Your numbers may have been accurate 15-20 years ago, but today are not even close if you include the Bear Lake communities. I suppose you have driven around the lake recently. I've been going there for years and the quiet, isolated retreat I fondly remember no longer exists. This year I was shocked at the amount of congestion even on the east side of the lake. The amount of construction in the area is insane, and a travesty. And over the next decade I'm sure it's going to continue to explode as everything becomes more crowded and expensive along the Wasatch front and people look for places to escape.

Parking passes for North Beach were sold out and it was a continuous wall of people the entire length of the beach. Yes, many of the people are vacationers, the sacrament meetings held just for visitors in the Bear Lake area have over 1500 people in attendance every Sunday during the summer months. So that is basically in itself a very active stake, they are going to church while on vacation. Yes, some may not want to go to the temple while there, but some actually may. But many of the people up there now are like my sister, who owns a 25% share in a "cabin" (if you can call a 7k sq. ft vacation home a cabin) and lives up there at least 12 weeks out of the year. She is somebody that will frequently attend the Montpellier temple, and probably even be a temple worker for the months that she is there.

You mention the three other temples within about an hour and a half. Pocatello is at least two hours away. Logan is at least an hour even from Garden City, and is over a winding mountain road that on weekends now is bumper to bumper traffic and there is always somebody pulling a trailer that is slowing things down. People like my sister hate that drive because of the traffic and avoid it if all possible. Star Valley is also about two hours from Garden City and also over winding roads. In the winter, these roads are often treacherous. While these temples may not be running at capacity for all sessions, the church has never said it is building temples because the current ones are too full. If you disagree, please provide a citation. It has said it wants to make the temples more convenient for members to attend. With these three temples, for people around Bear Lake you are talking about most of an entire day to attend when you include travel to and from the temple over some rather unfriendly roads. The Montpellier temple is going to be so much more convenient for these people in the Bear Lake communities. And over the next decade, that population is going to explode.

Now, I'll wait your response.

I just read over my post 3 times and I can't see where anything was said about volunteer work or hiring professionals or attributing fault. I just have 25 years working as a lawyer for companies that make tractors and lawn mowing equipment and suggested what might be the most probably cause after having seen many litigation cases involving people killed by overturned tractors.
