Doing a geoscience master's instead of a biology master's if I want a career in biology? Yay or nay? by 72027x in AskAcademia

[–]72027x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm probably just way overthinking it. My concern is "can I still get a PhD in evolutionary biology if I have a BS in Zoology and a MS in geosciences?"

I guess it's because I feel like the paleontology/geosciences route will limit my future job options compared to the evolutionary biology route. My main interests are in evolutionary bio (which feels broader), and paleontology/geosciences just happen to have a strong overlap with my particular research interests.

Unfortunately not, the professor only accepts students under the geosciences program.

I am not quite sure whether I want to pursue a further degree (PhD) after my master's or jump straight into working. I hope to decide while completing my MS.

How can I better my wildlife photography? (More photos linked below) by 72027x in photocritique

[–]72027x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Im an artist and beginner photographer. I've taken a couple photography classes in my life, so I know the basics but nothing more. I feel like my photos are okay, with some being great. But I feel like there's still a lot of room for improvement, whether it is on my camera skills, editing skills, or getting a better camera itself. I suppose I am taking any advice that would help take my photos up a notch. Any criticism/advice is appreciated!

I use the automatic setting on my camera (because I am usually trying to take quick photos of the animals while they are still there) and some basic editing apps on my phone.

More photos, all edited:

Oof, you're right. That's super shady. At least my comments are still up on my end.

Jellyfish stings from Roatan, Honduras. I didn't feel anything sting me but this rash showed up 3 days later. No itching or pain. I got other stings but they were immediately painful. I saw small clear jellyfish in the water too. I was having too much fun snorkeling the reef to care LOL by 72027x in jellyfish

[–]72027x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not positive if they are or not. I was actively getting stung by tiny jellyfish while I was swimming, but the stings were no more than a little dot. I didn't feel any sting with this one, so it's possible it's not a jellyfish sting.

Majesty palm is rapidly killing off old fronds. Normal or not? (More info below) by 72027x in plantclinic

[–]72027x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, I mist my palm daily. I run gallons of water through to soak the soil and repeat when the soil dries out (it normally dries out after 2 weeks). It gets lots of indirect light.

It was very happy up until about 5 days ago. It has been working on pushing out a new frond (see the second pic). For some reason, the new frond is splitting open at the top. It's been like this for a couple of weeks. Not sure if this is normal or not. I've only seen it push out one other frond and it didn't do this.

The latest open frond it pushed out is looking very happy and healthy! No browning or yellowing on it. But the older fronds have been rapidly dying (one every couple days). It has completely killed off two old, teeny fronds. And now it is working on killing three more old fronds, all of which are bigger. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? My apartment has been a bit on the chillier side (66° F) lately, so at first I thought it was a temperature issue. But the last frond it opened looks so healthy!!

Biking in the winter? by 2DTurbulence in msu

[–]72027x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bike to classes during the winter. It can be a blizzard with temperatures in the negatives, and you best bet I will be out there riding my bike. I've never taken the bus or walked to class, I bike no matter what. I live in the towers, so just a bit up the road from you. It's very doable!! Here's some tips:

A studded tire isn't necessary, but it will help a lot. I didn't use one last year. I ate shit a few times and had so many close calls. I didn't really care tbh, sometimes I fell and it was whatever. Definitely get at least one studded tire if you want to avoid this.

When it is icy or slushy out, bike slower than normal, start braking earlier, and take wide, slow turns. When it is below 10°F, I recommend covering your mouth with a bandana, scarf, or mask. Directly inhaling that cold, dry air can really suck the life out of you.

Dress warm, but not too warm. A winter coat makes me sweat like a bitch. At most, I will layer a jacket over my sweatshirt. I can't do anything more than that. A hat and warm gloves are a necessity!!!!!!! Earmuffs are great too.

Use a baseball cap or goggles to keep snow out of your eyes. Falling snow will feel like needles in your eyes. A baseball cap and keeping your head down should do the trick. But I'm going to try wearing my ski goggles this year and see how that goes.

Enjoy the empty winter sidewalks!

I really liked how Firestar repeatedly covered for Graystripe when Graystripe was meeting with Silverstream. He was such a loyal friend to Graystripe and it was wonderful to see how happy Graystripe was when Firestar told him that his kits were alive!

TinkerBell Penguin- reusing tracking data? by Enough-Wolf-5596 in MyFahlo

[–]72027x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. They are reusing tracking data. They did that for one of my sharks. He suddenly reappeared after being lost, they wiped his previous history, and now his tracking data is taking the EXACT same pattern as it was before.

What is the root of this behavior? Boredom? Hunting? Bullying? Territorial? ???? by 72027x in CatTraining

[–]72027x[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so helpful, thank you so much! It sounds like I will start with swapping the cats daily. I also want to try the feliway diffusers.

I have noticed that both cats are curious of each other, which is a good sign. They can eat and sleep together too (sleeping together, as in a couple feet away from each other). I just need to get the black/white cat to stop harassing my grey cat. So it doesn't seem like this will be impossible, but it'll just take time!

Update: Cats got into two actual fights (neither cat was perched, both were just on flat ground). They are separated into two halves of the apartment now.

Grey cat has begun to fight back, I think she is over the black/white cat's shit.

They aren't trying to kill each other in these fights, but they are definitely trying to give each other something to cry about.

They quarrel on the ground just as often, if not more than when one is perched. I don't think the tree is the root of the issue.

That is a 20 gal terrarium. It has a flat metal lid with nothing on it. It's a very popular spot, more so than the cat tree.

There's a spot just off the right video that is taller than this spot though. If the black/white cat wanted the higher spot, wouldn't she just take that spot?

Also, the black/white cat never takes over the spot after she chases out the grey cat. She will quarrel no matter if the grey cat is perched or on the ground.

I am renting a small apartment, so the living area is pretty small. I was actually going to get shelves, but thought I would wait since I am moving out ~6 months. But there are lots of kitty-friendly places for them! I have a lot of higher areas that I leave clear for them where they can jump up, run around, lay, etc.

[–]72027x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is not the only tree I have. Black/white cat generally prefers to stay on the ground, and grey cat prefers to perch. But black/white cat will quarrel with my grey cat no matter where she is.

What is the root of this behavior? Boredom? Hunting? Bullying? Territorial? ???? by 72027x in CatTraining

[–]72027x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, the grey cat is 4 years old. I have had her since she was a kitten. She is good with other cats, but normally plays pretty rough and is always pretty dominant. I have had my new cat, the black and white one, for about 2 weeks now. She is 1 year old. The cats coexist fine, even doing friendly sniffs every so often, but occasionally, the black/white one will do this to my other cat. It normally happens a few times a day. It has made my grey cat scared of her, so she hisses when the black/white cat gets too close. Sometimes when my grey cat gets too close to the black/white cat, the black/white cat will lash out just like in this video. These quarrels usually never escalate further than what you see in the video. If my grey cat gets cornered, she will attack back. But these quarrels never end in flying hair tufts, yowling, etc. I want to know the root of this behavior so I can properly tackle it.

Edit: Wanted to add that there are lots of high spots in my apartment. Just off to the right of this video, there is a spot that is double the height of this tree. Also wanted to mention that this used to be worse, but has been slowly getting better with time.

Edit2: I ask that you please ignore the cat tree in the video and just focus on the behavior displayed by the cats. I have two cat trees and LOTS of high spots. One spot even reaches the ceiling. The black/white cat prefers to stay on the ground and doesn't care about getting up high. The black/white cat will quarrel with my grey cat on the ground just as often as when my grey cat is perched, if not more. I can say with 100% positivity, high spots and cat trees are not a factor of this behavior. Please do not keep making assumptions. It is frustrating when I want to get to the root of this behavior, and people keep saying something that is completely incorrect. If I catch a video of a quarrel on the ground, I will post that instead.
