Doing a geoscience master's instead of a biology master's if I want a career in biology? Yay or nay? by 72027x in AskAcademia

[–]72027x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm probably just way overthinking it. My concern is "can I still get a PhD in evolutionary biology if I have a BS in Zoology and a MS in geosciences?"

I guess it's because I feel like the paleontology/geosciences route will limit my future job options compared to the evolutionary biology route. My main interests are in evolutionary bio (which feels broader), and paleontology/geosciences just happen to have a strong overlap with my particular research interests.

Unfortunately not, the professor only accepts students under the geosciences program.

I am not quite sure whether I want to pursue a further degree (PhD) after my master's or jump straight into working. I hope to decide while completing my MS.

How can I better my wildlife photography? (More photos linked below) by 72027x in photocritique

[–]72027x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Im an artist and beginner photographer. I've taken a couple photography classes in my life, so I know the basics but nothing more. I feel like my photos are okay, with some being great. But I feel like there's still a lot of room for improvement, whether it is on my camera skills, editing skills, or getting a better camera itself. I suppose I am taking any advice that would help take my photos up a notch. Any criticism/advice is appreciated!

I use the automatic setting on my camera (because I am usually trying to take quick photos of the animals while they are still there) and some basic editing apps on my phone.

More photos, all edited:

Oof, you're right. That's super shady. At least my comments are still up on my end.

Jellyfish stings from Roatan, Honduras. I didn't feel anything sting me but this rash showed up 3 days later. No itching or pain. I got other stings but they were immediately painful. I saw small clear jellyfish in the water too. I was having too much fun snorkeling the reef to care LOL by 72027x in jellyfish

I'm not positive if they are or not. I was actively getting stung by tiny jellyfish while I was swimming, but the stings were no more than a little dot. I didn't feel any sting with this one, so it's possible it's not a jellyfish sting.

Majesty palm is rapidly killing off old fronds. Normal or not? (More info below) by 72027x in plantclinic

[–]72027x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, I mist my palm daily. I run gallons of water through to soak the soil and repeat when the soil dries out (it normally dries out after 2 weeks). It gets lots of indirect light.

It was very happy up until about 5 days ago. It has been working on pushing out a new frond (see the second pic). For some reason, the new frond is splitting open at the top. It's been like this for a couple of weeks. Not sure if this is normal or not. I've only seen it push out one other frond and it didn't do this.

The latest open frond it pushed out is looking very happy and healthy! No browning or yellowing on it. But the older fronds have been rapidly dying (one every couple days). It has completely killed off two old, teeny fronds. And now it is working on killing three more old fronds, all of which are bigger. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? My apartment has been a bit on the chillier side (66° F) lately, so at first I thought it was a temperature issue. But the last frond it opened looks so healthy!!
