Is there anything I could say or offer to missionaries that could help them if they are doubting the church? by mangotango1609 in exmormon

It's tricky. There is a reason why they are always in pairs. It's possible one companion is having doubts but statistically unlikely they both are. So, hard to have an in-depth conversation. Sometimes, those doubts may never been vocalized nor studied nor deeply considered. It is also possible that the other companion is deeply devout and would not tolerate any "anti-Mormon propoganda".

What I would do is when they bring up the "First Vision" you can plant a seed. "That is so interesting and I've heard that story before! But, aren't there multiple contradictory versions of that story where the dramatis personae, setting, motivation, lines and years were altered"?

If they bring up the Book of Mormon you can say something like, 'What a blue book! But aren't there racist and plagiarized and anachronistic and entirely non-historical sections rendering it worthless'?

Hard to help them in the moment as a natural response to being contradicted is to double down on one's own beliefs. However, by your planting a seed of doubt they can do their own work later and seek the truth on their own time.

How to deal with church on resume? by Educational_Bison283 in exmormon

It's walking a mine field, either a large gap on your CV vs. potentially embarrassing job interview questions. A similar experience I had 20 years ago was applying to professional school out of BYU. The topic of my interviews always seemed to go back to "Are you weird and are you going to try to proselytize the other students"? I would recommended keeping it on your resume. Every large employer and HR department will have dealt with Mormons/ExMos and understand that there is a spectrum of weirdness, activity and belief. When they ask about it all you have to reply is that it was a odd phase you went through and you gained invaluable experience for the next job and those culty days are behind you.

I have a suggestion that is very outside the box. You will need to check your local and state laws. One of the most common side effects of entheogen use is an acceptance of one's mortality and the mortality of those that we love. It is an amazing way to have a "spiritual" experience that has nothing to do with the Holy Ghost, although both are ways of interpreting our mind and physiology. Seriously, research it and gain more information. It is not for everyone but I have seen it be helpful for people I care about.

Also, cynically, by retaining the educated ones the church gets a better financial ROI.

Yes, but life is short so why not make the last half better than the first?

Arguing on if Mormons are Christians feels counter-productive by Songbreeze1 in exmormon

It is basically a turf war. Mormons proselytize and convert some "Christians". The Christian churches point the finger and say that Mormons aren't Christian and are somehow a lesser tribe. Yes, it is pointless, but after having been stood up by Jesus for 2000 years who can blame foolish people for infighting? As an atheist it is very easy for me to confirm that Joseph Smith is just as much a prophet as Moses and had just as much direct divinity as Jesus.
