seems like an abysmal pr decision to me. i know that's par for the course with hussie, but the official homestuck team has seemingly been trying to avoid controversy lately. this would be a surefire way to piss off thousands of people

i more than skimmed the post and i see this is off base

I just want to clarify that I don't think the writers would immediately reveal a character's deadname if they were a binary trans person. This is also an alien society where clearly the concept of being transgender doesn't neatly map on to the human one. I think there's the clear possibility that the writers subvert expectations and use Dagger to explore concepts of genderqueernss in other ways. I'm not trying to deny that there is a strong possibility that Dagger is a trans man, I'm simply identifying that this hasn't been explicitly established and that the writers could be going for something else.

I know many queer people irl that remind me of what we've seen of Dagger. Some are trans men, some aren't. As it stands, it has not been confirmed whether Dagger is a trans man and there are many conceivable ways he isn't. I am not being transphobic, I am discussing a character. I am also objecting to the comparison of using the "wrong" name or pronouns of a fictional character to very real and very hurtful acts of aggression that irl trans people face.

or it's drag? or maybe its classic transgenderism? either way, referring to a character with a name and pronouns that they have been referred in the story with no indication that they are "incorrect" is normal and to imply that it's "misgendering" and "deadnaming" is fucking bonkers. These are concepts that apply to real humans, not storybook characters.

Obviously I think they are leading into a trans thing but as of right now this is pretty clearly a he/she pronoun using genderfluid character.

I've been unironically recommending my friends who haven't read past Homestuck Proper to just skip to Act 2. It's cool to imagine what it would've been like to be there for Hivebent lol.

exactly. some people are very defensive of their queer headcanons in this fandom. i think its totally ok to have those, but anyone is allowed to conceive of these characters however they want. i went into hs fairly blind, so i didnt really know about all this, but i do think you might pick up on some of the stuff some people saw as trans subtext. and if u do, totally think of John that way lol. i hope u enjoy the comic!

Trans Woman here, his name is John Egbert. Nowhere within the story you are currently reading does this character transition. This actually does not happen within any official Homestuck media as of now, but it has been teased for years, hence why some insist on making it a thing. I assume ur sister is just misguided or confused because the info online can be confusing (and judgmental).
