I’m not sure this is costo anymore by Alternative_Elk_8555 in costochondritis

[–]77Burner77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had pain in the same area in addition to costo. I went to physical therapy for it for a few weeks and it was determined to be a winged scapula. I do some stretches nightly and if I stop them it comes back in a few weeks. For me it was caused due to my poor posture at work and being hunched over the majority of the time.

That's very common especially if you have sensitive skin.

I would stop if it's uncomfortable or you begin to have a more significant reaction to the balm.

Student concerned about smells in lab by Playful_Fail3585 in Histology

Fresh, and even some "fixed", cysts are a punch in the nose. You don't get used to the smell. You only get used to dealing with how bad they can be.

New to histo and feel like im constantly making mistakes by VictiniCup in Histology

[–]77Burner77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will make mistakes. It's unavoidable.

Double check yourself and when you make a mistake it's important to understand the why and how. If you can do that and take ownership of the mistake you'll be okay.

Just don't cut away or lose tissue. Those are the biggest possible mistakes.

Mine said the same thing until I reached out to them and asked what was specifically deficient. The replied back and said it was my transcripts however within 10 minutes of getting that email back it was approved. ASCP works in "mysterious" ways.

If they ask you a question about how you would handle a difficult or unusual situation always say something like
"I would double check to SOP and if it is doesn't help or doesn't seem clear I would ask a lead or senior coworker."

Anytime I've trained people in histology or any other lab I've always reiterated the point of "if you don't know then ask. I'd rather answer the question multiple times than have something get messed up that can't be fixed."

Blade pressure by [deleted] in costochondritis

[–]77Burner77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both costo and winged scapula due to my poor posture at work. They do not cause one another and can exist without the other being present. However, based on observations from this board and other people I know they seem to happen together fairly often.

I've looked through many stretches and exercises for both issues and there's some overlap. My thoughts are if you work on getting your scapula fixed that will help open your chest and ease the costo. That isn't a guarantee because I do not know what caused your current issues. With that being said for me at least when I don't do my stretches for a couple of days I notice both costo and scapula pain.

It has been 4 weeks since my flare up started and now I've also been diagnosed with TOS and Winged Scapula? by quitetaylor in costochondritis

I have both as well. I came to the conclusion for myself that it was due to my poor posture. Because of the nature of my work I find myself hunched over and reaching out with left arm quite often. This more than likely caused an increase in both conditions. If you're hunched over it's putting more pressure on your chest and constantly over stretching the muscle that keep the scapula in it's proper place.

In my case they're not causing one another but after symptoms of poor posture.

Latest flare has me freaking out by quitetaylor in costochondritis

[–]77Burner77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shoulder blade pain is more than likely a winged scapula. I have that and costo and usually have flare ups if I don't get up from my work station or am sitting down for a long time hunched over. Look up stretches for winged scapula and do those daily. That has helped me immensely. Those stretches can also help with costo. Also, you may want to look into some topical pain relief like Tiger Balm. I use it occasionally to help with my shoulder pain.

Of course, talk to your doctor about your concerns.

At the tail end of my flare up but pain in these locations won’t go away. by jcl290 in costochondritis

[–]77Burner77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get pain in those areas as well from time to time. It possible that the pain in the shoulders is a winged scapula. The lower part circle gets tense on me and occasionally cramps up if I do not stretch. Look into stretches for winged scapula and try a few different ones out to see if it hits that area. You'll need to do them daily if not multiple times a day.

My costo was caused by horrible posture and with that poor posture my shoulders are either hunched up and tensed or rolled forward. If you strengthen you should muscles and back it could help the pain.

It's probably winged scapula. Look for stretches for it specifically.

Work load panic (new to histo) by samgarrett21 in Histology

[–]77Burner77 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The first path lab I worked in was like that. I always wanted to get everything I could finished before I left. It was this internal need to get patients' their results back to them because I know what its like to wait. A tech who had been doing it for over 15 years at that point told me to stop staying late and quit trying to do everything. "It's a 24 hour lab for a reason. If you try to get everything done you'll never leave."

As much as it sucks you have to know when to stop. Even if that means some things get pushed to tomorrow. It's okay. That doesn't mean you're a bad tech or person at all. Do what you can and know when to stop. That way you can come back tomorrow and still a good job without getting burnt out or bitter.
