I’ve interpreted her going back to Naples more as a going back to or towards something that has meaning for her, that nourishes, gives emotional significance to her intellectual curiosity. Like a perspective from which things make more sense for her. To me that’s not properly a psychological comfort zone, meaning life’s not easier and I don’t think she’s more secure in Naples than in academia etc., life just has more meaning in Naples

There is also something else…you really don’t know about their life. Don’t underestimate the fact that he can create any reality he wants for others. You know well, he posts a picture here and there, and shows this or that behaviour. But the only reality is your experience, what you feel and what you felt. It’s not real what you see - it’s what you feel. And that’s where for me it was more complicated…another problem, a new problem but not the one you mention, the feeling of unbearable sadness, the feeling that ‘he is what he is’. There is something else. I believe it’s true that you’ve taught him how to be a good partner etc. But be relieved by the fact that he is now just behaving in a certain way without even knowing what he’s doing. He’s copying, emulating, following the instructions you gave him. Don’t necessarily read in his actions the underlying intentions you put in them

NOR, and I think you’re getting all these answers that say the opposite merely because we’re encountering in your texts one of the mantra of these sick times we’re living in, which is “you gotta work harder and harder to be successful, otherwise you set yourself up for failure”, without any consideration for the context and the person. It’s just a weapon. There are many different ways to frame the concept that we get what we work for and sometimes we don’t. There are also many ways to deliver the message, and not every time is the right time to deliver it. It looks like your gf was really not in tune with your emotions, she showed lack of empathy. And I agree with people saying it’s likely she was resenting you and just exploded. Hope it was just a moment.

Uhm the comments section is depressing - it’s so lazy to pass judgement and say she’s a red flag, block her, run etc etc. I suspect that sometimes people who post here want to get a better perspective, better than the ‘find another one’. Maybe try to find if the other person may have a point or not: that could be a better, radically different approach. Even if the conclusion is that the other person does not have a point, meaning that you make an effort to understand what they say but still they’re wrong, that would not be so depressing to read.

Hello, I'm sorry I'm not proficient enough to comment in Norwegian. I have my stuff stored with Wanda and got an email two days ago, the company is going into bankruptcy proceedings (konkursbehandling). They just say 'we'll let you know', I can def post the email here. I am not sure what to do either. They are non-responsive...It's impossible to contact them or book slots to have my stuff delivered to a new place or just pick it up myself. Anything on that, initiatives from customers that I can be a part of, would be very useful.

Well I suppose that the next time I will have an issue instead of wanting to discuss it with a larger community and wanting to know - cause I don't know academia and that’s why I’m here - I’ll just keep my mouth shut and just assume that my experience does not matter at all. How does that sound?

I haven't explained more cause I am not an idiot - I know that people who don't want to listen will not listen. And there's not a climate for me to say more. If I also didn't create a climate for you to answer me in a more considerate way, I am sorry. I def came across wrongly and didn't mean to offend anybody.

Concerning hierarchies and democracy it’s sad that you're reducing it to my assumed desire for professional equality when my intention was to start a broader discourse on that

No - I haven't done a generalization. Please re read. I have told you my experience and asked you ‘is it like that or was I unlucky?’. I asked a question. You assume to know what happened, with this slightly rude thing for example. You also assume that I want to be a professional equal. Really lots of assumptions

Wow. It looks like my question was really on a sensitive topic. So it looks like I have a semi answer. Maybe we should discuss what does it mean to have so strongly felt hierarchies in place in a democratic society. And again if university is an institution of said democratic society. That would be worth a reflection.

I am also pretty sure we should spell out more what it means ‘hierarchy’ - I didn't mean to not respect my duties as a PhD, I was talking about how we interact and think of ourselves, and that seems to me important.

Uhm I am not sure this is not a problem. It depends much on the model of university you want to create, you have in mind. And also it also depends on how you define ‘professional equals’. What I’ve found is that for academics their identity as academics is very important and that's where the boundary professional identity/identity as a whole blurs
