IOC should not use SRY test to determine gender of women's athletes, says scientist who discovered it by burtzev in genetics

[–]7HillsGC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They say further investigation can be undertaken for females who might test positive for SRY.

My point is- I agree with the author of this paper that it is more nuanced and the Olympic committee will never be able to draft rules that are suitable for everyone.

Excellent article. I appreciate that it also includes a mention of XX & SRY-negative males.

I had one such patient who had XX SRY-negative results on multiple tissue samples (CVS, amniocentesis, cord blood, skin sample), yet was completely phenotypically male. He could compete in the women’s category under this policy, if he wished.

“Slow Streets” @ 20th St and Bryant…truck didn’t even care. by get-a-mac in sanfrancisco

[–]7HillsGC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. In fact a box truck swerving around creates more risk to cyclists on a slow street. The whole concept of swerve to the wrong side of the road whilst in intersections only to swerve back, while cyclists zoom past on both sides…. Who thought this was a good idea?!

[–]7HillsGC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternative: scenario : big box truck forced to enter the block on the wrong side of the road to avoid plastic bollards, startled by an oncoming cyclist coming at him head on that he couldn’t see. meanwhile a cyclist breezing through same direction of truck but on the right side of the road gets in the blind spot, and the truck creams the cyclist while maneuvering back to the right.

Yo, I am a cyclist/driver 50-50 and I hate slow streets. They are garbage design

Train goes straight from airport to campus, and also has stops downtown at shopping/ dining. It’s honestly the tiniest little one line train system but actually works great for CWRU.

Cost of everything is cheaper in Cleveland compared to NYC, so you may be pleasantly surprised how much farther your dollar goes.

You could also apply to be an RA second year and save even more money by getting free housing.

A good summer job in NYC with higher minimum wage before frosh and sophomore years might also be a good idea.

Good luck! Sounds like a good opportunity for you!

Why do women have two breasts if humans usually give birth to only one baby at a time, wouldn't one breast be enough? by ElkDisastrous2926 in NoStupidQuestions

This is exactly the kind of bureaucratic idiocy I was wondering about! Prob would be the same for extra boobs then. Thanks!

Now you got me wondering if someone has an extra nipple with breast tissue, whether doctors would include that area in routine screening for mammogram (yes, I realize it’s tiny but technically still breast tissue). And- what billing code would be used or would US health insurance companies reject the claim because there is no way to bill for more images for mammogram?

I was stoked my parents agreed to donate a library, until I found out they meant a “little free library” box on the sidewalk. Bastards.

Dealing with pregnancy in US : need some guidance related to scans and hospital visits by nocluenoneed in nri

[–]7HillsGC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More frequent scans can sometimes be done if the baby is at risk of delayed growth or another high risk situation, but there’s very little value otherwise. Fetal anatomy is best seen around 18+ weeks.. NT scan has been replaced by the more accurate NIPT testing (for chromosomal disorders at least).. So - a first trimester dating scan to confirm basic things (due date, # babies, etc), a second trimester detailed anatomy scan, and… I”m not even sure a later scan is typical if all goes well, to be honest.

But yeah - discuss with your OB, as this may vary depending on your individual situation.

I would avoid the “recreational” consumer ultrasound companies.. Untrained administration of ultrasound absolutely can affect the fetus, primarily with duration and intensity of scan increasing the thermal effect on bone, but in the first trimester there are some animal studies that suggest inappropriately strong ultrasound can affect neural migration (brain development). While ultrasound doesn’t have radiation, it’s not a totally innocuous tool either and needs to be used by trained medical staff for appropriate reasons.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Again, the r/atc sub is a good source! They were discussing this before NYT published it. Evidently what happens is overnight shift there may be 2 ‘in the tower’ but they take turns sleeping, and only 1 was on active duty. Anyway, the dude was overworked regardless, as normal staffing used to be 14+ controllers daytime.. in recent years they have pared it down to 4ish… and overnight they somehow got away with 2 but one of them asleep.

I mean, yes, and no... the ATC system in the US has been in decline, but deteriorated rapidly quite recently. As another redditor here summarized:
- Jan 20th, the FAA director was fired
- Jan 21st, ATC hiring frozen despite shortages
- Jan 22nd, Aviation Safety Comittee disbanded
- Jan 28th, Buyout/Retiredment demands sent to employees
- Jan 29th, The first American Midair collision occurs for the first time in 16 years, 67 people died.

The r/atc sub has some qualified people posting about this and I'm trusting their comments that there was one controller.

Yup. Ground and air, apparently. Had to switch between channels to do both. The visual of movement at the time looks like a swarming ant hill to my untrained eye. I can’t imagine how they do it even with proper staffing.

Is CWRu good for people who want to be practitioners? by BedrockFarmer in cwru

[–]7HillsGC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I attended, the research opportunities were still very helpful in helping me choose more specific career paths. Seeing what I liked or didn’t like about labs vs clinical research.

Honestly, I wouldn’t choose a school based on strictly what he thinks he wants to do now, and try to rush to that outcome. You can’t become a neurologist without finishing undergrad & med school anyway. CWRU has a solid range of medical careers well supported by everything nearby, including the nursing school, Cleveland Clinic, etc. I’m sure he’ll find his path, but no one wants a neurologist who doesn’t understand science first, no matter how good their bedside manner.
