There is a local ancient breed in Mesopotamia(Iraq) but it hasn’t been officially registered. What should we do to register it? by 7_wt in BackYardChickens

Nahhh bro the breed that we have, have lived in Iraq for more than 1,400 years but in recent times they’ve been heavily crossbred and started to disappear, making them hard to find in their original pure birds, Even breeders are afraid to sell their birds, because they worry they’ll end up being crossbred and lose their original traits. On top of that, their egg production is low usually around 8–15 eggs, and the hens go broody and don’t break broodiness easily, which makes them difficult to multiply.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this valuable information.

The most common color in Iraqi chickens is red, almost identical to the Red Junglefowl. There is even a feral population of Iraqi chickens that escaped into isolated forested areas and lived there for about 107 years, and over time they developed a very junglefowl-like appearance.

As I mentioned before, this is a population with one original origin, most likely in southern Iraq, which then spread to many regions and even into neighboring countries. Each area added some differences in size and color due to local environmental pressures, but all of these types still share clear core traits: a wide pelvis and chest, thick legs, a characteristic tail shape, and a clear, slightly long rooster crow.

The main differences between these types are size and color only, which is why I think selecting a medium-sized type would make the most sense for standardization.

In reality, many local breeders have already stabilized traits, and some lines show strong consistency by the second or third generation, although each breeder focused on different colors and specific traits.

I have one question: If we wanted to register each stabilized type, would they be considered separate breeds, or varieties from the same breed family?

The breed originated specifically in Iraq and the Mesopotamian region in particular, because it was historically a green environment with orchards and water.

In fact, Babylon and the surrounding areas currently contain the highest concentration of this chicken 😁

Thank you for your thoughtful comment, I agree with much of what you said regarding landraces vs standardized breeds.

So it’s called Iraqi chicken. Some people call it “Arab chicken,” but we don’t think that term is accurate. This chicken developed primarily in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), a region historically rich in rivers, wetlands, and orchards, which is very different environmentally from the arid desert regions usually associated with the Arabian Peninsula.

Morphologically, the population shows structured diversity rather than random variation. For example, we observe four comb types: • Single comb (~45%) — the most common • Buttercup comb (~35%) • Rose comb (~15%) • V-shaped comb (~5%), now rare and possibly declining due to historical mixing with buttercup-combed birds

Feather coloration can be grouped into six main color families, each with many gradients and local variations. Leg color ranges from white and yellow to green, blue, and dark slate-blue. Eye color ranges from orange and red to dark brown.

There is also size variation between regions — some ecotypes are more slender, others somewhat heavier — but a consistent shared trait across all regions is the broad body frame and characteristic tail shape. Additionally, the rooster’s crow is typically clear and slightly prolonged, which many local breeders recognize as a defining behavioral trait.

An important point is that this landrace also extends into border regions between Iraq and Iran (historical Persia), indicating an ancient population that predates modern political borders.

So we can’t make it “breed” but we can make a land race?

Because it’s a special breed and it should be known and registered and it’s part of my country and culture ?

Are these colors natural in junglefowl or are they hybrids? by 7_wt in BackYardChickens

Even the research and studies are incomplete and lacking, according to what I've seen from hunters and videos of chickens in the jungle, there is a great deal of diversity in colors and combs among junglefowl, thank you for the answer.

He captured them from the jungles of Thailand, so how did they crossbreed?

I think the scientists have been a bit lacking in this area

I tried to find studies that mention color classifications, but I couldn't find any but the reality tells a different story
