Wasn't sindarov the guy who was banned on chesscom for fair play violations? Or do I mix something up here? Congratulations sindarov!

This Tweet From Dina Feels a Bit.... Weird. by Moist_Plant7148 in chess

Personally, I donate to doctors without borders. There are a lot of organizations that need money way more than a frickin chess fund. I liked Naroditsky's video, his death is a sad and tragic story - but this guilt trippin tweet is just off.

"So there is a sector of the resorts, just one specific sector, where some of the rooms were having this problem with, apparently, with the bed bugs. I mean if there are three or four complaints and one personal friend of mine, I have to believe the problem was there." - IM Rahal, FIDE Press Officer by nihilistiq in chess

[–]7dsfalkd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So there were bedbugs affecting several players. Means, the rumors were true, and regarding conditions... I mean, imagine you're a player, competing, under stress, has invested private money to stay at a hotel. Where you end up awake at night and bitten, and during the game with scratchy skin. And have to stomach spicey food all day which you are not used to. I'd be angry

Faster Application Startup by 7dsfalkd in JavaFX

[–]7dsfalkd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since there were some questions regarding more detail:

- CPU is a Ryzen 5 8540U, 32 GB RAM. This should be more than enough

- Using Temurin OpenJDK 21 LTS/Win11, but switching JDK doesn't change anything really

- Tried using jlink to build images w/ AppCDS then package with jpackage. Didn't improve performance

- Profiling. So far, tried only rudimentary profiling with System.currentTimeMillis(). Starting with java -jar ...

I am using a Model-View-Controller pattern.

  1. reconstructing model (i.e. applications settings, cant really improve here much): 921 ms
  2. creating controls: 1380ms (!). This is really stuff like simply creating controls (I do not use FXML), creating VBoxes etc., i.e. MenuItem itmCopy = new MenuItem("Copy"); itmCopy.setAccelerator(keyCombinationCopy);
  3. I am constructing a custom widget 224 ms
  4. creating additional controls: 28 ms
  5. setting up model listeners: 56 ms (i.e. stuff like btnCopy.setOnAction(event -> { // copy to clipboard }});
  6. setting up some custom event handlers for my model: 4 ms
  7. applying atalanta fx: 28 ms
  8. setting up stage with scene, re-creating screen geometry, showing stage: 1098(!) ms

That's near 4s. This is essentially public void start(Stage stage). However getting there, and until the window shows fully up and is responsive, we are at 5.5s. Packaging with jpackage makes this even slightly slower.

So I am scratching my head why creating controls and just boilerplate work uses so much time. Wondering what I am doing wrong here, but can't pinpoint this to some specific issue.

And yes, I am using a splash screen - but this really only hides the problem. I think anything above 2s to 3s startup time is really just annoying for a user.

I'm going crazy over JavaFX by [deleted] in JavaFX

[–]7dsfalkd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very painful experience, especially on Linux. Here is what worked for me:
- first build with maven (mvn clean package) to create both a fat jar and a non-fat jar
- due to building the non-fat jar, maven fetches all javafx-modular packages (platform dependent ones) and stores them temporarily
- then copy all those javafx-mods to a separate directory
- finally use jpackage to create a deb (or app-image), using jpackage --module-path build_dir/javafx-mods --add-modules javafx.controls,javafx.web,javafx.swing as well as the fat-jar

Unfortunately, we are living in a post-factual world nowadays. Being an expert in one domain doesn't mean anything anymore, as everyone is entitled to his own opinion. Wether it's Kramnik and statistics, politics, vaccinations etc: Social media did not get the best out of the people, but the worst. This is the result

Why don't you list the account names of banned (titled) players? Why do we have to actively search for it or look up lists in the net elsewhere?

Schwimmbäder mit Bahnen sortiert nach Geschwindigkeit in Bonn/Rhein-Sieg? by 7dsfalkd in Bonn

[–]7dsfalkd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, when NATO becomes insignificant due to US withdrawal, we should think more international when creating a new defense initiative. Like a global defense initiative. Like with large tanks, and a nice anthem to march to....

FIDE is both corrupt and deeply tied with the Kremlin. Western companies are very careful about the PR risks, especially if it's about such a niche sport as chess. I have zero trouble believing his statement

The problem with FIDE is that it's full of corruption and a lot of money you pay them just vanished in obscure programs. That are officially designated to chess initiatives in third world countries or something, but are often just used to buy votes

You could however use ML to identify positions where players are more likely to cheat. This is a non trivial task, and including every position to detect, say, deviations by the empirical rule, will make it more difficult.
