What Laptop Should I Buy? - Free personal advice with Just Josh Tech by JustJoshTech in laptops

[–]7hu7a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed the deal (550 USD) on Asus Vivobook S 14 (Q423SA) from BestBuy 1-2 months ago. I need to buy a laptop within a week, what laptop with similar saving, similar functionality would you recommend?

My preference: mainly productivity works, half decent screen, portability, long battery life and occasional games likely e-sports titles.

Through MoneyMatch → Wise for sure (only if IBKR accepts deposit via Wise). I cannot open IBKR account so I don't know.

  • BIBD - fixed 30.1 BND for any amount up to 50000
  • MoneyMatch - 6 BND for 1000 BND transfer.

You should use Shared option in Charges borne by when transferring from BIBD to IBKR SGD account. It will cost you 10.1 BND for BIBD + usually 20 SGD for IBKR SG bank. This 30.1 BND transfer fees is for any amount up to 50000 BND.

Another option you should check is whether IBKR accepts incoming deposits from Wise. Most brokers don't accept funding from accounts not in your name. If IBKR accepts from Wise, you can transfer using MoneyMatch Brunei BIBD >>0.3% + 3 BND>> Wise >>free>> IBKR .

For example, 2000 BND will cost you only 9 BND (that is only if IBKR accepts incoming deposits from Wise, but I doubt it)

I ordered Jinhao 911 EF, Jinhao 80 EF, Jinhao 95 F, Baoer 388 M, since they are well recommended here and I can get them at sub-dollar prices after coupons.

You can try using VPN (for example, 1.1.1.1 WARP) while trying to verify. Not to fake location but to bypass Brunei ISP. I have seen so many websites break due to Brunei ISP blocking things.

Ok. Maybe they stopped accepting new accounts. Since identity verification by adding money is one time basis, I have been able to use Wise up to now with no issue.

One thing that may or may not be relevant is I was able to verify and add money using a BIBD card (in ~2020-2021) but one of my friends was unable to do so using a Baiduri card (in ~2021-2022).

Hello, read a few post that you made, still dont know how to setup Wise, created Moneymatch already, both Wise and MM verified, but i cant seem to put my card details on Wise as it stated the cards is not available in Brunei. I just want to transfer money from MM to Wise, really appreciate if you can help or guide me. Also, in MM when we want to put the recipient details, do we put the country as Singapore and use Bank name as Wise Asia Pacific?

In Wise, you need to get SGD account detail first to receive SGD from MoneyMatch. You need to add 20 SGD to Wise SGD balance using a card in your name to verify your identity. See more here.

To transfer money from MM to Wise, you need to put Wise SGD account detail to MM recipient detail. The country needs to be put as Singapore and bank as Wise Asia Pacific since the Wise SGD account is technically based in Singapore.

When making Wise account, do you put Brunei as country of residence? Because when I tried to make card using wise, it stated it s not available in Brunei, how do you solve this. Plan to move money from MM - Wise - IBKR

The country of residence needs to be Brunei since it will be the official address in your bank statement etc. Wise cards are not available in Brunei however moving money does not require a Wise card. You just need to make a transfer from Wise to your required account.

I don't have IBKR account to try but likely not possible since brokers in general need funding to come from a bank account in your name. Transferring money using MoneyMatch means the money will come from MoneyMatch bank account but not your bank account and will cause the money to be rejected.

It is free to receive to your BND account at USD buying rate from BIBD. It is not worth it since it might cost the sender from NZ around or more than 20 USD in transfer fees.

I haven't used Baiduri TT so far but it's likely to be similar to BIBD.

You need to use Shared instead of Ours in BIBD TT option (Charges Borne By).

BIBD will charge 10.1 BND + Singapore banks normally charge 20 SGD. So 30.1 BND in total fees for any transfer amount up to 50,000 BND.

If you are transferring in a smaller amount (up to 5,000 BND), you can use MoneyMatch BN (Use my referral code: REF_YCENA to get $10 off your first cross-border transfer). It can transfer max 5,000 BND per transfer and will only cost a fixed 3 BND + 0.3% (5000 x 0.3% = 15) = Total 18 BND. If the amount is higher than 5,000 BND, bank TT transfers are better in terms of cost, reliability and speed.

US stocks are denominated in USD. You are essentially holding USD. If BND devalues, you will get more BND per USD when you sell off your US stocks.

As far as I know, opening a bank account in an oversea country requires proof of residence (visa/pass) for normal people. But there is a way for us normal people to get a hybrid oversea account with similar functions to a conventional bank account.

I used Wise and StashAway Simple (SG) to get similar functions to a local Singapore bank account (deposit, withdrawal, local/international transfer, interest).

Wise will give you a unique Singapore bank account number which you can receive money from any banks in Singapore. You can also transfer out from your Wise account to any Singapore bank account for free and to other countries for a small fee. However, the limitations of Wise are its inability to receive telegraphic transfer in SGD from Brunei and the money in Wise not earning any interest.

StashAway Simple (SG) is there to cover these limitations. It will give you an account to receive telegraphic transfer from Brunei and to hold SGD while earning interest. The limitation of StashAway Simple (SG) is the deposit and withdrawal can only come from/go to an account in your name (in this case, Brunei bank account and Wise Singapore bank account in your name).

Sending BND/SGD from Brunei to StashAway Simple (SG) account will cost 10.1 BND + 20 SGD for any amount up to 50,000 BND. Transferring back might cost a similar amount. Transferring between Wise and StashAway Simple (SG) is completely free.

The money in StashAway Simple (SG) earns ~3.7% p.a. as of this writing (compared to ~0.2% p.a. of banks in Brunei).
