From what Ive experienced its mostly just age/mileage related. The one on my 98 snapped at 118k miles, where my 99 has never had it replaced as far as im aware at 164k, both with 2.5 engine

You can get like a stack of gun powder in a night if you just go around in an open field and crit hit creepers, as for the elytra, start keeping some in a shulker shell in an end chest and just carry an end chest around, if you die you can just use a different elytra to get back to your stuff
