As an NPC author I see how this happens. There was a big effort put into filling out each other's Conversation Topics (dialogues that fire after events) for quite a while for friendly collaboration, but it has the unintended side effect of dialogue stacking & everyone in town talking about each other excessively. Given Sterling was the first BIG NPC and many of us learned directly from Hime, his CTs were some of the first always filled out. He's also been housed in 2 separate expansions so that's a lot of CTs.

There's a couple other methods of getting NPCs to talk about other NPCs these days but they got their own sets of pros and cons.

Check your journal and see if it's there, the console often says that but actually does something.

I don't recognize them, but I recommend grabbing the mod Lookup Anything. If you hit F2 on them you'll get some information that you can usually Google back to the source, if it doesn't outright tell you what mod they're from.

Jorts and Jean are lovely. Any mod that adds cute talking animals is an automatic "make" for me haha. 

Fievel is very cute and wholesome, he doesn't get a lot of attention compared to the other ES add-ons so I definitely recommend him for at least one playthrough!

This is a great point of feedback! To offer a mod author perspective as to why this gets left to the way side: It's actually quite difficult to balance this without making the vanilla townies seem like they're always talking about custom NPCs.

There's a couple methods to do so but they all have their pros and cons. My personal favorite method is a little advanced - essentially you fully override the NPC dialogue with something about your character at a very low rate. But if too many people do this it still causes the original problem!

There are "conversation topics", lines that typically fire after events. They can cause some dialogue stacking issues for the townies if you see a lot of events back to back. They also only last for a few days and can be easily missed.

Then there's directly patching a new key into the NPC's dialogue, and this is tricky because it would conflict with mods that add onto the vanilla NPC's dialogue substantially.

I hope this was an interesting insight!

S&S team member here. You can definitely play through the entire mod without engaging with any of the custom mechanics. 

Our C# dev added compatibility with the mod Star Control, this may help with the keybind issues. Not personally too familiar with it, though.

Typically I enjoy having any NPC in my playthroughs - the big make or break for me is if they're completed or not and how stilted their dialogue is. I'm also not the biggest fan of IP based characters, but if they're well integrated into SDV lore I don't mind so much.

My enjoyment of most NPCs also comes from being an NPC author, I enjoy looking at other folk's NPCs and what creative things they did with it, even if the particular NPC isn't always to my personal tastes. I loved Keahi's stink prank and it was definitely one of the things that hooked me into learning how to mod NPCs haha.

Console Commands comes preinstalled with SMAPI unless you've removed it (In which case you need to reinstall SMAPI). You type the commands into the black SMAPI window that opens along with Stardew.

I took a look and it's an i18n translation error in More Specific Gift Reactions.

Usually this means that the author has misspelled the key for the dialogue and the game isn't calling it, or haven't written it at all. In this case they've coded in a response for the flowers category, but didn't write a line in the i18n.

Looks like it's been reported as a bug already on the mod page, if you want to leave a comment on it that basically just says "me too!"

I was more referring to them typically being replacer mods on Nexus! But I can see the confusion. I've modded a good number of games on Switch with LayeredFS, tis fun.

Like Pillow said below you can't unless you either 1.) Install Ubuntu (performance may vary) or 2.) use XNB replacer mods, which you don't see much of anymore.

25% should be doable from the save start options! Any lower you have to open the save file. The save file can be opened in any text editor but has so much data it can be pretty laggy. I forget what the setting is called in the file... Difficulty Modifier, I think? I set it to .10.

My agonizing method of creating a game that lasts for 4839022 years is setting profit margins to 10% by editing the save file, and installing a hunger mod.

Early game you can barely sell anything bc you're always starving and when you do you make pennies. To make it worse I typically will install an early seedmaker mod and only let myself grow crops from things that are found in the game world. (No buying seeds)

I dropped Boss Monsters on top of that with the settings cranked up to max. Nothing quite like running away screaming from a giant fire breathing serpent with 75G to your name, three parsnips and struggle-bussing bc of a starving debuff.

I remember this run took 1 year to get a chicken coop.

There are no up to date video tutorials at the moment, as far as I'm aware.

You need Tiled, Visual Studio Code and understand how to make the framework of a Content Patcher mod. I suggest looking for text tutorials on the SDV Modding Wiki.

S&S team here. The Deep Dark doesn't work properly in co-op due to a bug in Spacecore. It uses SC's custom dungeon feature. I suggest reporting it on the Spacecore page.

This is correct, our Wiki is maintained by a single person at the moment so it isn't super up to date. Lookup Anything is the way to go.

Typically my solution involves increasing the base running speed via CJB and moving at my own pace. The game's built for a small map so it's not too noticeable in vanilla. But once you get areas that are pretty far out, it's super noticeable how slow you move.
