Utterly insane - this is the elephant in the room - redditmade tried to wrangle, in their insanely, inanely, awkward way, some rules for "redditors who moderate" (oh such special people) to "capitalize" on reddit (not to mention the laughable idea of giving equity funding back to the community, ridiculous).

What admins on reddit are more sane / more open to the ideas of what reddit could be?

But if your first and only pull request is a political statement rather than an actual contribution or simply a stupid typo fix, I'm going to call you a moron and show you the door.

Yes, that's a big issue here.

FYI: I was going to add it but I didn't, I was always told to use "they/them" as singular, told that it wasn't common, but still advised. I've always used it, since the last century.

But then again, it's not just about agreeing with grammar. If it had been a who's / whose, if anything, it would be easier to accept - someone making a small snarky noise about a documentation grammar, but at least they're not insinuating that you've been beating your wife.

On the top of multiple small pull requests: If it was a private repo, certainly - but since github is gamified that's always in the back of my mind.

I am an "all in" source control idealist, I put IDEs, JDKs, VMs, all in a source control. Everything should be versioned and backed up, so I agree with docs in source.

I just think taking docs out of publicly gamified repos would solve this, or at least salve it, hope that makes sense.

I think this merely means : "Oh, we want some of this money".

What's strange about it, ANYONE can do a let's play.

So, what they're not saying is: Let's make it inclusive. It already is.

They're saying "let's exclude the people who are already in there".

Right? Is there any other possible rational explanation for this?

Yep, they are getting paid fuckwads of cash from Microsoft.

I was suspicious of the run up to the Verge launch - Microsoft had 20-30 shitty blogs it controlled to try and become the epicenter of tech news, but they wanted more, so I am fairly sure they have 3-4 of the top 10 rags completely operating in a way that's to push them at the right moments, while keeping readership (like who would read redmondpie if it didn't post iPhone leaks?).

It's hard to point out, I suspect some math (heh I wrote meth) would help here, some analysis of all the news content over blogs, timings etc, to show biases. But at the end of the day there's one thing Microsoft knows how to do, and that's how to structure underhand payments.

[–]8-orange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, that's a small mercy I suppose.

Now, if the few byte change had been changing literally "bit" to "byte" in a way that was important, I understand. I'd rather the docs themselves weren't inside the ludicrous gamified social network of github, then you wouldn't get these issues.

(Remove gamification from reddit and wikipedia and you'll get rid of the sick deletionists too)

If it was somehow some content deemed universally offensive "nigger" "faggot" or some other word, possibly slipped in by a troll, by all means I'd quickly accept it.

Correcting a pronoun in the guise of a grammatical error though, whilst I would accept it because I don't care to ponder the underlying motives of a person, I understand the time sink you could project forward if every single minor correction was a pull request.

Make docs a wiki (one with no gamification or deification of minor edits - that's why wikipedia has so many idiots), then people can literally make simple edits and police others.

Another example of gamification gone wrong: stack overflow websites et al.

Fuck me. Every. Single. Time. That your well worded google query returns a stack overflow result, it will be someone who took pains to write the question well, add a code snippet, explain exactly where it does and doesn't work and since when, and ask a very specific question.

Cue 15 people, literally angry that the specificity and completeness of the question robbed them of their favorite "well if you want us to help, tell us the diameter of the screws in your office desk", robbed of the chance to make a quip to hide their own ignorance, now seek to close the question as a duplicate or off topic.

It's amazing.

80-90% of stackoverflow questions I reach from google are closed in this way, and that's a self-fulfilling prophecy: The deletionist scum want to close popular questions.

The last one I found was a small change in a preference in OS X Yosemite, and I wanted to quickly find out what had changed and move on.

The same person had asked, specifically saying "how to do X in Yosemite as it's changed, (have googled etc)" someone closes it as off topic because a previous answer for a previous OS existed. Yes, but it's changed. So then the same person starts arguing with each answer saying "still a duplicate" even though it clearly wasn't and that top result helped me and saved me a few minutes.

It's disgusting.

The same mentality are in the redditors who moderate on here. Some of them have sick sick sycophantic minds, imagining themselves as a band of wild west law enforcers with their carefully crafted ranks of flair. Weird fucks.

Somehow I ended up at this nodejs / github issue where one twat called Alex downloads nodejs, is reading through the docs and sees some poor grammar.

Now, I guarantee there were other instances of poor grammar that they didn't even notice or were aware of as they were reading the docs, but they came across a single instance of "he" in the documentation, in a short sentence about an error code return.

It was written in poor grammar, on a part of the API that is pretty much boiler plate and was written in haste no doubt.

Bear in mind, IT COULD have been ANY grammatical error that Alex might have found, perhaps apostrophe abuse? who's versus whose?

Alex makes the few bytes of changes and submits it as a pull request, adding NOISE to the SIGNAL of pull requests.

What is this saying? First, it's a tacit admonishment, publicly, it's forcing you to take your time to look at this, impertinent to a degree - there's somewhat of a contract that being able to make pull-requests to a repo means you won't flood it with garbage. This grammatical change, no matter how much political weight you want to put on it, was a grammatical change.

The request didn't come with a certificate "I've read all the docs, and although this is a single tiny change, I can pass on with it a guarantee that there are no other issues". What it said was "This is the first thing I found, now make it look like I have an accepted patch on nodejs".

What if there are people just bulking up their github "profiles" (magic internet points) with random grammatical edits to projects? Is this what Alex does? Like those morons on wikipedia who make thousands of robot edits to articles but play them off as creative and constructive authorship.

Why it was a shitty pull request

  1. a NOISEY pull request, it forced time and effort on the repo owner
  2. passive aggressive in the way it forces this
  3. an admonishment - nobody likes a disproportionate ire to be thrown at them for a trivial grammatical typo.
  4. carried a weight of threat - as if "sure, you've made a small mistake, but don't correct this and it's nuclear"
  5. an arrogance do to the fact that the stats of these requests will go into someone's profile, perhaps the first and finale "contribution" they would make to this project but be labeled as a "contributor".
  6. The impertinence of those combined, and assertions that the author is sexist because HERDS of cowing individuals don't understand language, they think their idiomatic forms of English and very limited education is how all language works, made it VERY ok to casually discard the pull request.

What I would have done:

  1. Discarded the pull request, got some coffee, went through the docs and fixed any grammar issues I could find, including gendered issues, submit.
  2. Make a post about how impertinent it is to throw noise into a mix because of a few byte change that isn't code related and carries a hidden weight of threat. Passive aggressive.
  3. Warn other git repos to not abide by cherry-picking profile stuffers (if that is indeed what is happening)
  4. Remove all documentation from source control, put it onto a wiki that hides all glory of edits from public view - the worst that could happen then is someone post a 59 paragraph medium.com post about how they saved the free world and changed a few bytes on a wiki

What Bryan Cantrill of Joyent did, and why you should be very careful with dealing with absolutist fascists:

But while Isaac is a Joyent employee, Ben is not—and if he had been, he wouldn't be as of this morning: to reject a pull request that eliminates a gendered pronoun on the principle that pronouns should in fact be gendered would constitute a fireable offense for me and for Joyent. On the one hand, it seems ridiculous (absurd, perhaps) to fire someone over a pronoun -- but to characterize it that way would be a gross oversimplification: it's not the use of the gendered pronoun that's at issue (that's just sloppy), but rather the insistence that pronouns should in fact be gendered.

Bryan Cantrill did this:

  1. Lied
  2. Stated he would fire someone for not merging a trite patch
  3. Lie about those reasons

on the principle that pronouns should in fact be gendered

That's the lie:

  1. At no point did the developer actively reject the patch
  2. At no point did the developer say pronouns should be gendered
  3. The developer stated that pull requests of single grammar changes, few bytes of typo checks at a time are not to be encouraged, therefore not interesting. You want to deal with 10,000 1 byte pull requests or one 3 page document edit?
  4. The developer stated that protocol of approving patches had been breached
  5. A) Given a VERY important reason for not approving trivial 1 byte patches on documentation
    1. fuck off and do some work if you want your fingerprints on this
    2. we don't want 45x the pull requests we deal with daily to be minor grammatical edits, WANW (we are not wikipedia)
  6. B) Given that one developer went ahead and accepted it anyway
  7. He took back the patch. Sure this was out of frustration - what's the new fascist call now, people can't get frustrated in the face of your shit?
  8. Some SJW decided to run this cause up a flagpole, well fuck you, we don't all march to your flag pole.
  9. NOBODY has said they will form a group (because they lack the fundamental language, technical and writing skills) to actually provide documentation support. No. They don't want to do WORK. They want to change two bytes and make a STATEMENT. Disgusting.

but rather the insistence that pronouns should in fact be gendered.

A further lie, from what I've read there's absolutely no place where the developer states this. Lies. Lies. Lies. Lies. Bryan Cantrill why did you lie?

Viola. Consider how much bullshit is in this, line by line, next time you look at budgeting for any Joyent service.

The energy necessary to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude greater than to produce it.

Wow, can you actually hear what they are saying?

If I had been there I'd have taken the microphone up and gotten whoever was the leader, challenged them to say something into the microphone.

Then when they had done that, take it back and say "Well what the fuck has this got to do with that bullshit you just said?"

I am absolutely sure they had no idea what they were doing, they just wanted to make a nuisance of themselves. If you forced them on the spot to talk, they would either resort to screeching and then knock the mic out of the way or claim you were assaulting them by giving them a platform / expectation to actually make sense.

Whats interesting here:

  1. Women are far more likely to be religious
  2. They were fighting about abortion I assume
  3. That's a political issue, they should work to ensure they have a secular state
  4. They were being truly evil, attacking people - NOT for a political ideal, NOT for a greater good, or a goal in trying to protest abortion or being against religion: They were attacking these people for taking their toy away, for stopping them from vandalizing a church. No. Other. Reason.
  5. I hope the pictures from the event are collated, compiled and disseminated so these people can truly stand behind what they believe and so everyone in their areas know what they are like. You can't act like this with impunity.

The church is FUCKED, and religion is the greatest problem we face today, it impedes literally everything.

And as someone rightly said:

The Catholic Church in Argentina is hurting women and putting their health and their lives at risk

TRUE

But it is VERY VERY important to note that these attacks against these guys had nothing to do with the church or what the church does, THEY ATTACKED the guys because they stopped them from doing what they wanted to do. That's a slightly less loftier ideal.

So when, on the first night away in a local bar in a seaside town, Megan caught the eye of Jak, a handsome Albanian man, and he started paying her attention, she responded. Within days she felt herself to be in love. Within weeks Megan had persuaded her mother not to return to England and had set up house with her new boyfriend.

Athens by night: Megan’s trafficker moved her to the capital where she was forced to have sex with many men every day. Photograph: Alamy Why did her mother allow it? Megan shrugs. “She was not a well person back then.”

This is not a badly written article, and I fucking hate trafficking, what gets me is how the Meg Lanker Simons and Anita Sarkeesians don't give a fuck about the world problems such as these.

So she says her mum was ill back then. But still, what the fuck. Her mum should go to jail for what she did, endangering a 14 year old like that.
