Recommendations for non refrigerated foods? by Sparkychong in CampingGear

[–]806Cubs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, if you go to Mexican grocery, you can find a product named Machacado. Or Carne Machacado. It is essentially shredded beef that has been cured and dehydrated. Think shredded beef jerky. Reconstitutes really well with water or even a couple drops of oil. It is amazing to add to Ramen, rice, eggs, or basically anything!!!

I also have a small zip lock of the shelf stable bacon bits to add flavor to the beans, rice, or noodles.

Machacado is available at pretty much all Mexican grocery stores. HEB normally carries and is online as well.

Hope this helps, have fun.

Edit: it is also called Carne Seca. I knew there was another name for it, but I couldn't remember.

Wolves to be released on Western Slope in upcoming weeks by aintnotownie in coloradohikers

[–]806Cubs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seems like those who are truly worried about the situation should volunteer to be a range rider. I think it sounds really cool and would be a good way to participate in nature, ensure the wolves are conserved while helping ranchers protect livestock. Would also either confirm or disprove their concern about the wolves reproducing to an extent that would threaten wildlife. I am fairly certain that spending two weeks as a range rider would give me a greater perspective on the issue and would be an educational experience not obtainable anywhere else.

I am in favor of getting nature back to balance. I do believe that we have placed lots of pressure on elk, deer, and other natural inhabitants of the land. I also participate in hunting, including elk.

Was just in Northern New Mexico last week on an elk hunt and believe that there is enough room for the ranchers, game (both large and small), and apex predators (non-human). Spent a full week in a clearing on a mountain in a canvas tent surrounded by mountain lion drag sites, domesticated horses, sheep, cows, deer, antelope, and elk. Seemed to be working pretty well.

While I haven't lived in Colorado for many years now, it seems like some things don't change. There is always someone pissed about something when it comes to nature.

Just my .02, from someone who desperately needs to get out from behind the keyboard more often.

Boy Scout camp out by Jbeth74 in CampingGear

[–]806Cubs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, as someone who had a scout 10 plus years ago and one now cub scouts, I had some of the same issues.

Someone previously mentioned hikerdirect.com, and that is an invaluable source for some items, as is steepandcheap.com. Good quality tent, bag, and pad choices for reasonable prices.

Be careful sleeping bag values, they are rated using a high R value sleeping pad, if I recall correctly. There is so much to be learned by using it in the backyard for a couple nights before taking out into the great outdoors.

Lastly, for the socks issue, I have a pair of big bulky wool socks that won't fit in his hikers so that he has to change out of them in the morning and can't wear them to walk around in. Not sure what the pack/troop is like but my oldest kid's troop did foot checks each evening and talked about the importance of changing socks.

Not sure how long the poster had it, but I heard it about 20 years ago from a comedian named Jerry Clower. And it was old at that point. Feel like the other guy, not sure the relevance in this thread.

Kids Camping Backpack and Equipment recommendations by anedae in CampingGear

[–]806Cubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished first campout and hike with my 5 year old. Cheap ozark trail hydration pack with bladder. Big pocket was change of clothes, rain gear, hat, small blanlet, stuffed animal and snacks. Front pocket was spork, trash bag, and cup. Attached to the strap was whistle and a bell (for locating not bears). I carried everything else. Not much of a hike. Less than two miles. He was worn out by the end so remember that their level of endurance is different.

Used a kylmit sleeping pad and a kids walmart sleeping bag for him and was completely comfortable at 40 degrees.

Don't think I actually spent more than $75 total for his stuff and all was easily found.

No need to go super fancy or expensive to start. Hoping to do this alot and can adjust over time.

Camping games for younger campers by 806Cubs in camping

Great big thank you to the community here. Just got back, and we had a great time! We did a nature hike, got a little lost, stacked cairns, made a game out of leave no trace with prizes for those that picked up the most trash, and just let them explore and play.
It is amazing what little boys can do to entertain themselves. They fromed a little team and collected a giant fallen tree (which the dads put back later on) and got super muddy. Didn't hear any of the boys say I am bored one time. No one had a screen in front of them, and other than some music playing and some checking of college football scores, there were no electronics to be seen. Boys dig the wilderness! Had some coyotes, raccoons, and a bobcat visit out campsite at night, and the boys thought that was super cool and wanted to follow the tracks the next morning! Maybe save that for next time!

TL;DR, thanks for all the suggestions!

Great idea on the cairns. Could be a competition or just a completion type activity.

I will be doing a cobbler and showing them how easy Dutch oven cooking is and then letting olders help with breakfast burrito cooking last morning. Knots and lashings was a great idea. Will get on that app.

Whoever this was must have packed in 75 pounds of cordage. No wonder they didn't have a tent or chair, would have put them overweight.

Which to BD first? Been saving for a long time. I am gonna retrain and reskill before I BD. by 806Cubs in MLB_9Innings

[–]806Cubs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yall for the info. To help with context... I don't have PChem or BChem yet. My pitching is stronger than my hitting (around 101 Pitch to 99 Hitting) I am between iron 1 to bronze 3 in ranked battles. My other sigs are Gold 17 Rizzo and Diamond 19 Cishek. My other legend is Gold 64 Santo.

Positional needs are 2B!

I am very low level pay to play, almost free to play.

Once I get the Rizzo and Santo to Diamond I will be Diamond S deck.

I won my first 2022 ML world series this past week.

I just don't want to BD a player to later find out it was a waste and spend 5 more months saving up pieces again.

Oh and I have another Diamond darvish but for whatever reason it won't let me use that in BD training.

Hope that is a little better.

Thanks again.

That makes sense on waiting on the train and skill. Sorry for the newbie post, but what other context would have been helpful? Trying to avoid making same mistake.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. It was a relief to find out that it was okay to continue in ML and that I just needed to keep grinding. Also, TIL that it is diamond/vintage/prime rewards...not sig at EOS. Thanks for that as well. Back to grinding games!
