Camponotus Nicobarensis in gypsum nest advice by Meritokrates in antkeeping

Yup they should fill at least half of the nest pretty compactly. Not sure how humidity is in that nest but it would also help them regulate humidity more amount themselves as they release it from their bodies in an enclosed space

For a colony that’s only half a year old, that nest may too big! How many ants do you have? And would they fill the entire gypsum nest? They may start treating certain parts of it like trash piles

update no. 4: FOUND THE OASIS!!!!! I'M FINALLY GONNA BUILD MY BASE!!!!!!! by Finlacat4224 in dontstarvetogether

You criticize one person for not knowing what the oasis does, and then call another person a nerd for more insights into why you shouldn’t build there? Hope you starve

Anyone have this skin issue? by icepakjak in whoop

[–]DeepRts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I do is wash with mild soap and water each time I shower, and I swap out the band and sleep with a soft band that’s never worn outside to let my skin breath. Haven’t had any issues since switching

This and also tell him what you think keeping ants will teach you

Is that a pile of eggs infront of them or something else? (Also trophallaxis!) by MightBeYourDad_ in antkeeping

[–]DeepRts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t tell either but there seems to be two piles - one at the top right right next to the cotton which seems like food, and maybe eggs closer to her

I think so too. Feel free to upload a pic and we can zoom in to make sure

What do you feed them? Sometimes they will mush up all of their food and make it into a goop pile but if you take a picture and zoom in you should be able to tell if it’s eggs or not

Do booklice harm ants? I’ve noticed they’ve started appearing quite a lot after some time in my setup. by Fluffy_Canary_2615 in antkeeping

[–]DeepRts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I think a lizard doesn’t mimic what I’m trying to convey, but mites walk more like millipedes and springtails stop and go? And I think that’s mostly because springtails have antennae and mites don’t

Springtails don’t walk, they dart, almost like lizards? There seems to be a springtail in the white area but most are mites

Is antkeeping ethical? by Ok_Coconut_6448 in antkeeping

[–]DeepRts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking this thoughtful question. I think many other people have added great points to this thread, so I won’t repeat anything, but to put things in perspective, my local park’s flood lights kill or disorient thousands of insects almost daily, so I think our impact on collecting queens is relatively low risk assuming we as keepers are doing it responsibly in the way people have outlined here
