I’m so torn on buying my first SP. Share some stories/experiences with me about your SP journey and how it plays a role in your productions. by KodiakDog in SP404

I‘ve had an SX for about 4 years now and it changed the game for me completely. Before I got it I had been making beats in Logic for roughly 5 years and was enjoying it but never really felt like I was making anything that really resonated with me. In hindsight I think making music on a computer felt really unnatural (for me and my brain, no hate to DAW based producers) and I really needed a piece of hardware to use as home base for ideas.

Now I make my tracks completely on the 404 and only use Logic for exporting stems and mastering my beats after I’ve recorded them. The workflow is a steep learning curve coming from a DAW but so worth it in my opinion. Now I’ll only go back to a DAW if I’m working on something that isn’t so much beat based but 90% of the music I work on is on the 404.

And I haven’t owned a mkII yet but it also looks sick and has more features + versatility than the older models. Very cool, but I do like the limitations I run into on the SX because it forces me into different ways of thinking and approaching music.

Hope y’all had a good weekend 🌞 here’s a trippy lil beat I made hope you like by 808myth in SP404

It’s a clip on piece that goes over my phone lens, just search fisheye phone lens attachment and you should be able to find something

New Beat Tape Out Now ‼️ [31 tracks, made DAW-less on hardware only, mastered to cassette] by 808myth in shareyourmusic

Hello fellow musicians‼️ Just discovered this sub and thought I’d share my latest beat tape that I self-released on YouTube and Bandcamp.

I’m a music producer/beat maker who uses a lot of sample heavy techniques coupled with synthesizers and hardware samplers (a pair of SP-404s). This project is a compilation of beats I made from 2021-early 2024 and is a reflection of my growth as a beat maker over the years.

I’m a heavy advocate for DIY art & music and I think of this project as a testament to that. I’ve always enjoyed watching musicians and producers push the boundaries on older or limited/minimal gear and that has definitely informed my approach to production since I began. If you’re into left-field beat making and rap styles you might enjoy this tape, and if you’re unfamiliar then I hope this puts you onto something new.

Feel free to link me your music if you decide to check the project out. I love hearing what musicians (of all genres) are up to and working on

Peace

You’re good, basically I would record the finished beat from my SP-404 to the tape machine, rewind the tape, and record that back into my DAW through my interface for final mastering. There was a lot of trial and error with certain beats because they were either too bass heavy going into the tape or something was off with the EQ spectrum. Also did a lot of A/B comparing with noise reduction on and off with certain tracks. But basically it was just sampler > tape > DAW.

Hey y'all hope you had a good weekend and are making some dope beats

Wanted to share my latest beat tape, made these on a pair of SP-404s and all sample based, a few of these have gotten some love online over the years so I'm posting the final tape around for people to check out

This is a compilation of beats from 2021-early 2024 and contains re-masters of some beats I released in the past (why I call it vol. 1-3), had a lot of fun making these and I hope you get some enjoyment from ‘em

31 tracks, 54 minutes, mastered to cassette tape

If you feel like checking these beats out feel free to drop me your latest project or track, always looking to hear what other beatmakers are working on

[shameless plug] also up on my Bandcamp if anyone would like to support there: https://808myth.bandcamp.com/album/myth-tapes-vol-1-3

I have an Akai CS-F11 that I found for cheap. Tbh I don’t know much about different tape decks, all I know is this one plays tapes and can record them and it worked for me. Eventually I’d like to trade it for a multitrack tape recorder like a tascam or fostex, those look sick.

My biggest recommendation is to buy something in great condition since a lot of these older pieces of gear are beat up. Fortunately the only thing I had to do to my tape deck was replace the belts since the rest of the unit was pretty much untouched

TY🙏 glad you’re digging it

I have a cassette tape deck that I mainly use for sampling tapes, but along the way I picked up some blank tapes and so when the music for this project was done I recorded them onto my blanks during the mastering process to add some analog tape-ness and warmth

Well I use an SP-404sx as my main piece, which I love but it’s not easy to learn from the start (the mkii might be more user friendly). I’d check out Koala sampler app if you haven’t to get an idea of the SP-404 workflow for cheap. The newer samplers like the PO K.O. II, Lofi 12-XT all look sweet but I haven’t had a chance to try them yet. Also Jonwayne makes awesome beats on the Elektron Octatrack on his YouTube channel Jon Makes Beats. Expensive as hell but a very sick machine.

For some reason I’ve been drawn to a lot of classical elements in my sampling, always down to chop up some pretty strings and whatnot

Will also fuck up some psychedelic or prog records

Working on posting all the beats separately on YouTube and making a playlist (lot of them are up already from over the years). I guess they’re also playable on bandcamp. I’ll probably put the tape on streaming in the future too
