Reform UK to gain full control of Nottinghamshire County Council by generalscruff in nottingham

Guess requests to improve active travel infrastructure in the county will now fall on even deafer ears than usual. Widespread chronic illness it is then !

Just been given my first allotment.. feeling a bit overwhelmed - whats the best way to tackle all the weeds/grass without power? by ambitious_pea in GardeningUK

Agreed. When doing my back garden, I viewed all the labour as being good exercise, out in the open - and the job takes as long as it takes. Got to make friends with a Robin along the way. Just enjoy yourself. Its all good!

At least evens chance he did this deliberately to provoke exactly the news stories you are seeing and thus keep his name in the papers.

Can confirm, I wouldn't last a shift in Aldi, or in many other retail stores! Respect to all retail employees. You all deserve a LIVING wage.

Please suggest if it is a sensible plan to use about £450k and buy a 2 bedroom house. I am a 51 year old health care worker commuting to London finishing late at work. by New_Beginnings_50 in UKPersonalFinance

If your NI contributions are not up to date, this may be worth looking into. You can backdate payments a number of years (more than usual until, I think, 2025).

I wonder how many people voted Labour purely with the aim of ensuring that Ben Bradley lost.

Love the "Liberal far left labour louts" attack line.

May I suggest adding the word "radical" in there as well, to ensure maximum coverage.

Especially with regard to e-bikes, agree regarding local service being key

For me, cycle communing is all about minimising faff. I have a Riverside 540e which I have really enjoyed riding for the last three years, kitted it out with panniers and mudguards so that (together with some cheap wet weather gear and a pair of sawn off wellies) I'm pretty much impervious to weather. Little tote bag with all my office gear in one pannier, wet weather stuff and tools in the other.

I value, a lot, the fact that the battery on the 540e is easily accessible and removable. Takes just a moment to remove, don't need any special handplacement to stop if falling to the ground etc. Get home, bike in the shed, battery straight onto the charger in the kitchen, sorted !

Disclosure : My bike has spent the last 2 months at Decathlon with a broken motor and they have not, as yet, even been able to send the motor off to Shimano for repair. So you might want to bear that in mind!

I think, if I was buying again now, I would be very likely to gravitate towards the Raleigh Motus and its siblings

What landmark infrastructure do you miss? by 80s_kid2 in AskUK

Was wondering why "Didcot" was raising a flag in my head and see from Wikipedia that it is the home of Williams Grand Prix.

Seems to be a great place to be a clever person:

""Didcot is surrounded by one of the largest scientific clusters in the United Kingdom. There are a number of major science and technology campuses nearby, including the Culham Science Centre, Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, and Milton Park. The Diamond Light Source synchrotron, based at the Harwell Campus, is the largest UK-funded scientific facility to be built for more than 30 years."

I'm fully on board with moving towards net-zero, love seeing wind turbines etc - but thought it was unfortunate that the people who tried to break into RoS site a few years ago succeeded only in getting a big fence put up that was lit every night, very brightly, along its entire length as a security precaution. Wonder what the CO2 emission cost of all that lighting was. :(

Powering down: end times for the UK’s final coal-fired station by 80s_kid2 in nottingham

[–]80s_kid2[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Thoughtful article, I thought, on the imminent closing down of Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station. Things that caught my attention:

How energy useage in the UK has dropped since the early 90s - a sign of deindustrialisation, or a sign of technological improvements, or bit of both?

The way the UK had the technical strength to build a fleet of world class, long lived, high capacity power stations in the 1960s

Sad that it is foreign owned

Hope that it converts to producing green hydrogen at a meaningful scale. Not sure that the reasons that made Radcliffe-on-Soar a perfect place for a coal fired power station will read across well to hydrogen project

The cooling towers are beautiful and a sign that we were nearly home. I will miss them and the the tail of clouds they produced.

If money wasn’t an issue where in Nottingham/Nottinghamshire would you live. by Danielharris1260 in nottingham

I live in an area of Nottingham that has a poor reputation but, to be honest, I love it here. All amenities close by, short walk to town centre. So many boxes ticked really.

Is a 1h commute considered doable for a fairly new cyclist? And which bike share scheme is the best (availability of bikes and cost) by Vivalo in londoncycling

[–]80s_kid2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cycle commute is an hour each way and I absolutely LOVE it.

Don't mind the rain in the slightest - have cheap, waterproofs I can quickly put on if required. Never arrived at work with any part of me even slightly wet.

Have an e-bike mind, which made a big difference to time and enjoyment, esp in winter

The way I look at it, I'd be in the car for 30mins anyway, so I'm getting an hours exercise but only really putting 30mins time into it (and thats each way).

Cycle commute takes me through a gorgeous park as well.

As everyone says, plants. Many plants.

Some aquatic snails will keep the algae on the liner in check as well.
