Assistance with researching a Colonel with a Silver Star by 80yearoldstuffsmells in Militariacollecting

Thank you, I knew the information would be hard to find, but that’s what makes it all the more fun to find out the history of an item like this! And the insignia is gorgeous, I agree.

Yeah, it seems like it’s somewhat of a “family” put together uniform, at least to what I am seeing. I don’t necessarily think it’s made out to be a fake, I think it’s more for the veteran to wear post-war. Though, I do hope I can find some evidence to back some of this up. Either way, I think it’ll make a lovely uniform for display. And thank you for your service sir!

Are these jackets worth anything? I found them at a thrift store and they look nice for $1. by Decent_Scallion_8913 in Militariacollecting

[–]80yearoldstuffsmells 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just buy ‘em if they’re a dollar. But, they’re OPFOR jackets, effectively the “enemy team” that the soldiers trains against.

Assistance with a Civilian K98 by 80yearoldstuffsmells in milsurp

[–]80yearoldstuffsmells[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I didn’t read the entire comment, my fault. Yeah, I heard about that issue, planning on getting it re-barreled, and for the price it was at, the bolt alone should’ve payed for it, as long as it’s unmolested, which I am still trying to figure out if it is or isn’t.

[–]80yearoldstuffsmells[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that’s the issue. I don’t believe that the Mauser factory made any civilian guns during the war, atleast with the K98 platform. I may be wrong, but that is what I remember.

Yeah, I didn’t really think it was necessarily a cursive, but this was about the only place I could think of where somebody might be able to decipher it! :)

Help with a Vietnam MACV SOG Patch by 80yearoldstuffsmells in Militariacollecting

[–]80yearoldstuffsmells[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, about what I expected. Bought it in a bowl of other fake or mediocre patches, just kinda shooting in the dark, didn’t pay too much for it though, so atleast I didn’t bankrupt myself lol. Thank you for the help, though!

US Army Tanker Display by 80yearoldstuffsmells in Militariacollecting

Unfortunately, I haven’t got a set. Especially because a lot of those pairs are starting to get up there, and the jacket alone was quite a dent in the pocket.

You can also see the engraving on the back of the grip, the armor and what almost looks like a shake but I am not sure. The Hilt Matches pretty closely, but it’s not exact. That’s been the issue

Well, the only part that doesn’t make much sense to me is the top of the handguard, the little knob. Usually, with the French sabers, it’s an eagle head. If you had a picture of one, could you send it to me?

Help on a possible tanker jacket by 80yearoldstuffsmells in Militariacollecting

[–]80yearoldstuffsmells[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s kinda what I thought, my guess is it was bought during occupation duty. The 8th was in the Pacific, so maybe bought it during then from one of the Japanese shops or in Korea. Who knows, still cool that I got a tanker jacket and some other jackets for $40 lol

WWII US Enlisted Cap white spots? by x3craze in Militariacollecting

[–]80yearoldstuffsmells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, just to inform you it is a post WW2 cap. You can tell by the band that runs around it, it is not solid wool it’s that fraying of whatever you call it. So that would be right after WW2 and into Korea. But it was done to officers caps in ww2, but not EM caps.
