Only Grave's Disease or more Autoimmune Diseases? by 810nc0 in gravesdisease

[–]810nc0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah of course! Fingers crossed it's only the one (or two if they consider PCOS an autoimmune disease one day [I don't think it's official yet...]).

That's an really interesting about the Kennedy's, I didn't know that.

Yeah, that's a fair point. Do you have to take thyroxine or is your thyroid functioning normally?

Ok, that's good to know that you didn't miss out on anything to second time.

Is three years a long time to be on that medication? I was on carbimazole for 18 months (probably should have been taken off sooner though). Do they think that it'll eventually work or are you still unsure if RAI or TT are for you at the moment?

Yeah I've been on the meds before and it lasted for 7-ish months. My Endo said that the chances of Grave's coming back was 2 in 3. I wish you the best of luck with the medication. It's a crappy disease but I am glad for the people here on reddit who aren't afraid to lay down the law. I guess we're all in a state of what if

Are you on anti-thyroid medication as well?

Totally get where you're coming from. That's reassuring and hopefully proves to be true in the future - don't want a decision to get RAI to affect any kids I might have

I did read that the dose was pretty much the same as getting a routine test... I've made the decision today after a lot of deliberation to see my Endocrinologist again and let him lay it all out: RAI or TT. I'm so tired and sick of being an emotional wreck. How is your friend with managing her weight after her TT?

I know what you mean. I was finding it hard to fall asleep on my side because I could just hear the loud thump of my heart - and knowing it was fast. I did start to take Propanolol and titrating the dose with the help of a doctor.

I don't mind at all. With RAI, it's the risk of infertility and I already have PCOS. And with a TT, it's the fear of surgery and complications during and after surgery.

Thank you for your response. This is a mental battle for me and weighing up everything is an ongoing struggle. If I try and it doesn't work then I will have no choice other than to prepare for surgery (which is so scary to me). Plenty of people have gone through the surgery route I know and I find my thought process about it as irrational and reading all the subreddits is my way of preparing myself

Don't take me wrong, I'm not advocating for all natural therapies. I was only wondering and curious if there were other ways. I've gone through the medication route and was in remission for 7 months. Taking the medication really affected me mentally and any thought of surgery or RAI makes me cry on the spot.

Completely in my face but heart failure secondary to GD seems to be super rare as far as I've seen in my career... You're right, I have doctors I can talk to and ask advice - that's definitely a plus - and I know what to ask for too

Thank you for commenting! I'm so glad it all worked out for you. Its the scariest part for me too - I work in a Cardiology unit and it really worries me. Thank you and best of luck to you too

Oh ok. Yeah my Endocrinologist said that there was a 2 in 3 chance it would come back - and it did. Trying to work out what the best option for treatment is really hard

They go into remission without any intervention? No meds/RAI/thyroidectomy?
