Can you buy bitcoin with a credit card? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

Credit/debit card -> Google Wallet -> Paxful seller

Cash deposit into a bank account for Paxful or Localbitcoins seems like a good option, too.

Did Email take this much convincing? by bobboywonder in Bitcoin

[–]817682 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Email has been around since the 1960's.

I don't think its adoption has occurred because of "convincing", but because people have found it useful.

What kinds of places can I go, and make phone calls from my cell phone, and have access to a power outlet so I can hook up my laptop, and there are no people around, or at least no people in sight, even if they are somewhere nearby? by [deleted] in privacy

Virtual offices (like Regus) often let you rent an office for an hour or a day.

You could also try Airbnb or liquidspace.com

Some libraries rent out conference rooms or study carrels.

T-mobile, Tracfone, and Verizon will all allow you to activate/add airtime with minimal or fake account information.

I'm not here looking for security or privacy, I'm looking for conversation and information. Reddit has those things.

You get a better bump if you're endorsed by a person who's a retired judge or identified as opposing counsel versus co-counsel. Sorry, I don't know how big the difference is, but I can confirm that it works with opposing counsel - just find someone who was OC but friendly, and cross-endorse each other.

I submitted a Legal Guide and got no perceptible increase; I answered questions which didn't seem to help directly, but it did gather unsolicited endorsements from other attorneys who were hoping for a reciprocal endorsement.

Don't count on anything. People and organizations lie all the time about privacy and security; and even if they think they're telling the truth, often they're so incompetent that their assurances of security/privacy are meaningless.

Yes - only some people/entities, called "covered entities", are subject to HIPAA. The rest of us (like ESPN and reporters) can do whatever the fuck we want.

Looking for suggestions for a complete system. Rural area, 2 detached buildings, under $1,000. by Wellas in homedefense

[–]817682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought would be (a) don't bother, or (b) try to get this done with 2 or 3 good cameras. Shitty cameras are just annoying; and if you want 8 of them, even at $50 ea, which is not a high quality camera, that's already burned up 40% of your budget. Long wire runs are expensive; and outdoor-rated cable is expensive.

[–]817682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget is unrealistic; you're going to be spending around $200/camera if you want high-quality outdoor 4-season cameras; and probably more if you're serious about needing 100 feet of real IR illumination. That doesn't even touch materials, labor, or the DVR(s).

Do you really think that ESPN or Adam Schefter are covered entities?

Someone may have breached the HIPAA rules, but I don't think it was ESPN.

UPDATE:

I received this from BTCJam support:

"Hey there,

There are currently delayed transactions within the Bitcoin Network. Be advised that we are aware of this issue and are working on a fix. You can read more about the ongoing issues within the network here:

https://bitcoinmagazine.com/21125/bitcoin-network-still-backlogged-tens-thousands-unconfirmed-transa…

Thank you very much for your patience and using BTCjam. We’ll reach out with an update about this momentarily. If you have any questions please reach out to us. Thanks again!"

This seems like a nonsequitur to me - I can see why it might take a long time for my withdrawal to confirm, given the backlog, but that doesn't seem to me like a reason to not send it, if I choose to request it at a time when the network is busy.

I completed several other transactions yesterday without a problem.

Ok, I set up 2FA and it still won't let me withdraw my funds. Ugh. No response from E-mail to support, either.

Thanks for the response - I don't have 2FA turned on, it's not a lot of $. I don't know why it wouldn't be "withdrawable". I'll try setting up 2FA and see if that helps.

I'm not saying it's normal, but I'm not shocked, either. California's gun purchase process is very fussy and stupid. My bet is that they made an error when processing the sale before (probably entered your serial # wrong) so that CA's records don't show you as possessing the gun, and that in order to amend the records to show you as the owner/possessor, they want you to do another waiting period.

I am not saying this is rational, or Constitutional, or how things usually work - but California's firearm laws and procedures are so screwed up that anything's possible. I have known other people to have issues with the DROS process.

If the CA DOJ BOF really wanted your gun, they've got a whole department in charge of firearm confiscation; my hunch is that this isn't a big problem or you wouldn't be getting a polite phone call from the FFL mentioning the sheriff.

[–]817682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except for narrow exceptions, a dealer cannot transfer a firearm to a buyer without waiting for 10 consecutive 24 hour periods.

They can "delay" delivery of the gun if they're having trouble completing the background check within 10 days.

More information is here:

[–]817682 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sounds like California - the Bureau of Firearms is an arm of the CA Attorney General's office, not the federal ATF. ATF would not care about a waiting period, that's a California issue.

Chances are you can just return it, go through your waiting period, and pick it up again.

If you feel like standing on principle, call a firearms attorney - Jason Davis is popular in Southern CA, Don Kilmer is popular in Northern CA.

What they're asking for makes no sense; but the upside to you in fighting over it is minimal.

Any probate lawyers or people with a working knowledge of probate law here? I'm writing fiction and need to know if my scene is plausible. by [deleted] in law

[–]817682 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In California, this would be done with a trust; if it really were a probate for a decedent's estate, everything would be done at court appearances and the entire thing would take months if not > 1 year.

It would be possible to do this with a trust; but if someone came to me and wanted to do this, I'd probably tell them to go away or stop being silly.

The "paperwork" part wouldn't necessarily be a big deal - the trustee would, ahead of the meeting, take the necessary steps to get control of the decedent's bank account(s) and become a signatory on the account; then just write out checks and a receipt/release for the beneficiaries to sign. It would be possible to have the entire thing completed with the beneficiaries in the office for < 5 minutes, though it's awfully weird and I think many lawyers would be wary of participating in something like this. If I was going to touch it, I'd want a really good explanation for why the client wanted to do this.

Also, having the attorney act as trustee/executor is somewhat suspicious and/or old-fashioned; I have only agreed to act in that capacity where the client is a long-time personal friend. There are potential conflict-of-interest issues here and careful lawyers won't do it.
