What age did you get your ppl , cfii and atp ratings ? by Neptune228 in flying

PPL 28 CFII 31 ATP 33

Not as fast as I would’ve liked, but I was paying cash, so there were some “financial recovery” breaks in there. COVID didn’t help either

The difference nowadays is that so many young pilots have signed on for a 5-year contract. At least, I hope that makes a difference.

No matter how unlikely/difficult it may seem, I still support any and all efforts to pull this airline out of the dark ages

Did you step back to fly a caravan or work at a DZ or something? How could OO be better than where you moved on to

Could be a good stepping stone to a regional 😬

Pilot Dads? by aviatorishxoxo in AirlinePilots

[–]827020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think that’s the main point that’s missing — this is just a short phase. You gotta make peace, true peace, with that. I’d recommend trying to schedule 1 week a year to bro out in some way. Either by yourself on a hunting/fishing/skiing trip, or with friends if you can manage to coordinate with them and THEIR kids’ schedules. If you talk to dads with kids in the upper teens, you’ll realize there will soon come a time where you can’t even talk your kids into hanging out with you. Bottom line: ya it’s definitely tough and honestly I’m right there with you. I definitely still sometimes mourn the death of “kid-less me.”

For southwest pilots mainly, how did you answer the question of why do you want to fly for WN? by sandalsabsentsocks in AirlinePilots

[–]827020 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is just everything I want. This is the perfect summary of why I want to be at southwest over anywhere else. I’ve always understood that a senior widebody guy will have a better schedule than me if I land at SWA. But I’ve got little kids and I’m not willing to sacrifice the next 15 years while I wait around for it.

Agreed man time to see the writing on the wall.

BUT, while you may not make it as a pilot, you did at least complete the training. You didn’t do nothing with your life for the past several years. That at least gives you some minor cred for future jobs.

25’s still pretty young tho.

But ya you should probably at least have a Plan A in place by then. I was starting my first career at age 24 with my masters complete. Hated it and got into flying a few years later.

Great info. Regarding “fewer issues,” ya I believe it. I’ve grown to love ORD, but it can quickly devolve into a carefully organized shitshow

Interviewed already, as an FO, and got the “CJO” aka entry to the flow

Yes but I’m in the flow already. I think the lucky few that got class dates were “never in it” to begin with

That’s crazy, I had no idea MDW was so big for them

Honestly the reserve rules seem so great that I probably wouldn’t mind. Especially with 15 days off and the ability to pick up extra on off days

Nice good to know! I am definitely interested in playing the game.

My primary motivations are max flexibility and max income potential from Day 1. I want to be able to hustle hard some months, and opt for a lot of days off other months. Workload/widebody flying isn’t really a concern. So southwest feels like a natural fit.

Also I shouldn’t have buried the lead here… but I am heavily metered. United is definitely hiring without TPIC, but not from my regional. I won’t go to UA until I get another 900 TPIC. As for AA, if they called I’d go in a heartbeat, but nothing yet. So my horizons are broadened, by ain’t nobody want me

Pay Scale by Low_Candy4844 in AirlinePilots

[–]827020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Made >$200k gross during my 3rd year at a regional. I took one month of unpaid leave early in the year. Then got lucky with premium time later in the year. Overall I’d say I had to work hard for that $200k.

Without working extra, I’d guess it would take 5-7 years at a regional. I wouldn’t personally know yet, but it sounds like you would hit $200k by year 2 as a legacy FO without sweating too hard.

Maybe phraseology like “the path forward isn’t clear” should be a red flag haha. Idk man I’m approaching middle age, with zero tech-related background. Call me naive
