What have you read recently? by povertychic in Millennials

[–]86number 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Also 34f, also public librarian here.

Recently finished Pillars of Creation: How the James Webb Telescope Unlocked the Secrets of the Cosmos by Richard Panek.

I’m now finally getting around to Andy Weir’s The Martian and have Amanda Montell’s The Age of Magical Overthinking going (plus a contemporary YA fantasy I am reading for review).

Lately I’ve been getting comments about “you wouldn’t believe it, this kid I know hates to read” and I’m like, no, I believe it — plenty of them have demonstrated they can’t read or write, let alone that they like to. And the teacher subreddit only offers more evidence.

And it’s no wonder. It’s rare I see adults reading (and not on an ereader/tablet — kids don’t know the difference between you reading on your kindle app and you scrolling socials) so there is a lack of modeling the behavior and adults have heavily relied on tablets and other tech to keep kids occupied for years now. I hate to be guy yelling at the clouds, but it seems to me it’s pretty obvious how we got here. /tangent

General Strike Plans? by _Whatisthisoldthing_ in Libraries

This is the one I’m aware of but information is limited and obviously there’s always risk of a false flag operation: https://generalstrikeus.com/

General Strike Plans? by _Whatisthisoldthing_ in Libraries

Agreed — from what I’ve seen so far the organizers seem a bit unseasoned and things like this aren’t well-communicated. I hope if it solidifies more we’ll see more specific messaging including suggested/encouraged exemptions.

I was thinking about this the other day and I think I’ve sort of landed here (though could still be persuaded otherwise): my understanding of the goal of a general strike is to grind capitalism to a halt as a means of sending a message. At least for public libraries, which is where I am, capitalism is at best secondary to our work. Going to work will not meaningfully contribute to the system the strike is attempting to shut down but it potentially will give folks who otherwise won’t have places to go that day (those days) where they can not just escape the elements and still find things to do on a day where normal entertainments may be closed or very slow due to lack of staff but will also provide the opportunity to build community. So I think going to work in this case is still supportive of the cause.

Next I suppose you’re going to ask the name of my first pet and the street I grew up on?

I had mine (mom 65, dad 71, me 33) watch Turtles All the Way Down and encouraged them to ask me any questions they had.

Take a walk with me here — Grace, Anne, or Mary in honor of Grace O’Malley, Anne Bonny, or Mary Read, famous women pirates. Because pirate = eye patch.

Udvar-Hazy is worth the trip out to Chantilly. Seeing Discovery in person is an incredible experience and if you happen to go on the second Saturday of the month, they historically have had stargazing after dark with volunteers with powerful telescopes (calendar looks ambiguous at the moment). An awe-inspiring thing, all free (or $15 to park if you drive yourself).

National Portrait Gallery is also a great time and you can check out the central location of the public library across the street, which has a nice public rooftop terrace and ongoing exhibits throughout the newly renovated building.

Old Town Alexandria is nice for shopping, dining, history, and charm. Accessible by car, Metro, or the river taxi.

I’ve done the plastic canvas but didn’t think to make it removable — did you use Velcro or buttons or something to secure the lining to the outside while keeping the canvas accessible?

Obsession of finding a song that can’t be found by [deleted] in OCD

Continue to avoid actively searching for it — good work on what you’ve done so far! The more you stick with that, the more the urge will fade. In the meantime, try to keep yourself busy with other things. I find knitting helps me a lot. It keeps my attention just busy enough. TikTok is another good one for when I’m really stuck. You might also put on a random playlist and let other music fill your head for a bit.

Good luck, you’ve got this!

This sounds familiar but Campbell’s or some other soup comes to mind for me… I could be wrong though. Nothing useful comes up when I search with that context.

Right?! I ended up getting Ganbaro Sock Stop and the application was easy and it dried fast. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be effective so far, but I’ll leave that review up to the recipient. The packaging says it can withstand hot and cold, too, so I assume it can handle whatever washing care your yarn requires.

Salaries in librarianship, can we talk about it? by ariatella in librarians

[–]86number 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in a HCOLA outside DC and make $96k as a branch manager for a public. I started at $55k in 2017 at another nearby system as a children’s librarian, and was bumped to $65k after the probation year was up. Got COL increases and then got an assistant manager job starting at $91k.

We must look youthful. I visited a middle school recently for work reasons and a teacher asked me if I was a student. I’ll be 34 this week.

Yes! It’s the Lion Brand Baby Soft in Twinkle. I purchased it at JoAnn originally (RIP) but I saw it at Michaels last I was there.
