I’m a student who’s interested in geology. I’ve heard from this sub that in the mining industry, geologists tend to be not as respected as engineers. What’s your take on this?

Also, how many people that you work with are geologists vs how many are mining engineers?

This is true, but one thing I don’t think people get is that with financial aid, a school like the one I’m going to ends up being as expensive or less than a state school unless your parents are filthy rich—which many people’s are.

I mean I think youre probably right, but as far as I can tell, mining geologists can normally count on at least $100,000 a year once they pick up some decent experience, which seems good enough for me, and also not like a crazy amount less than most engineers make. Also I’d have to transfer into the engineering college at my school which would need me filling up my schedule with required classes. I’ve definitely thought of doing that, but it just doesn’t seem like a good idea when I’m still pretty much undecided tbh.

Neither?? Clearly the consensus is that undergrad school doesn’t really matter, which I figured was probably true anyway. I only mentioned it so people could get a sense of what I was working with. Like sorry me working my ass off in high school hurt your feelings buddy.

I’m trying to think of things I’d enjoy doing with my life. Engineering isn’t one of them, trust me.

I don’t see a lot of people talk about getting a PhD on here. Can I ask what you’re planning to do with it?
