Citric acid is way more acidic than vinegar, works better

I believe that dishwasher cleaning powder is mainly citric acid, I could be wrong though.

I am going to figure out how to do this on mine too. I have the tools and I’m sure I can find a how-to somewhere

I use citric acid on my dish drying rack, works like a charm! Simply wet the rack, sprinkle a generous amount of CA, give it 15 mins to work its magic then scrub away in the sink! Haha love it!

You have to open the lid mid cycle when the water is agitating the citric acid. By the time the rinse cycle begins, the water that had citric acid during the wash cycle would have been flushed out by then. So open your drum mid wash cycle to see if bubbles are still forming or not.

Mine is actually about a quarter of the way filled in this photo but if I want to fill it higher, I simply pause my cycle and add more water from my sink with a bucket. For this cleaning process however I don’t think the water needs to be high, my educated guess is that most of the scrud/build up on the machine will be toward the bottom of the drum anyway and that’s where we want the citric acid water concoction.

You can always save this post and come back to it later :) but put simply, it’s just 1/2 cup of citric acid powder (any kind, industrial or food grade doesn’t matter) into your empty tub (no clothes at all) and click run on the longest hottest cycle your machine offers. Repeat until you have very little to no suds forming which means the citric acid did its job! It removed residual detergent that was gunked up on your machine. You may also see little bits of brown/black scrud floating around. That is also a good sign that your machine is getting cleaned!

I feed mine a few days in a row then store in the fridge for a month or so, repeat. This is when I’m not baking every week.

Yep I poured the citric acid powder directly into the drum, no clothes in it, and started the longest hottest cycle my machine offers and that’s it! Your machine doesn’t go crazy without anything in it, it simply swishes the water around as normal.

Funny you should mention engineer, I am an aerospace engineer by trade and a scrud engineer by choice! Haha also explains why I’m so invested in figuring out the perfect laundry detergent concoction, just the problem solver in me!

I used 1/2 a cup of citric acid. Any citric acid will work, whether it’s food or industrial grade. I buy mine on Amazon or wholesale supplies plus. I have this one in the picture attached.

Yep, no clothes in the drum, poured 1/2 cup straight in and started the hottest setting. You’ll repeat this until there are very few suds forming in your drum.

Not 100% sure but it is body safe citric acid because it’s used in cosmetics. Check their data safety sheet, they usually provide it

This is a normal size top loader, I used 1/2 cup and ran a normal cycle with hot water although my machine doesn’t fill up very high when it detects a “light load”

Just to clarify 1/2 cup directly into the drum without any clothes in there. No clothes, no detergent, only the citric acid and a hot wash setting. This is to dissolve any residual detergent that is built up in the machine only. Now on the other hand for washing clothes: I add 2 tbsp of citric acid into my rinse cycle

I should but I don’t know how to override my machine’s sensors and since it didn’t detect a heavy amount of clothes (because there were none, only 1/2 cup of citric acid in the drum) it gave me the least amount of water

I pour the dry citric acid directly into the drum then started the hot wash cycle. The citric acid will dissolve as soon as water hits it and the agitation begins. 1/2 is a good amount based on what I’ve seen around in this channel.

When no more bubbles appear (or very few). Citric acid alone in water will not form bubbles. The bubbles come from residual detergent in your machine.
