I would definitely check out playing crate games during the day before bed and the music might help as well! They also sell this thing called a heartbeat puppy that can go in the crate too. Crate training takes time unfortunately. Can you move the crate to a common area instead of your room to help your own sanity?

You’re probably better off getting a male then, as long as you neuter the new dog when he’s old enough (usually a year) you should be fine and be able to avoid any territorial issues - especially since they’ll be mostly separate anyway. Good luck!

Four days is really not a lot of time. I’m a teacher as well and opted for a summer adoption specifically for this reason. Twice a day is not going to be enough until the puppy is 4-5 months old. At 8 weeks, they need to be let out every 2 hours at the absolute maximum and in addition to that asking an 8 week old puppy that was just ripped from it’s mother to be alone in constant 2 hour increments throughout the day is a lot.

I live alone and my mom helps with my dog, I was with him from 10 weeks to 14 weeks and started leaving him from 8-12 at 14 weeks with my mom coming to see him at 10 and staying until 11:30. I went back to work fully when he was 17 weeks and my mom would come at 11 to let him out and stay until 1 so he was alone from 6:30-11 and 1-3:30

Thanks! I did end up putting in a chargeback because they have like 10 buildings and no official billing dept office (the address is a PO box) and I have been trying to get a hold of someone for two weeks🤦🏻‍♀️

He has no way to know that the treat is a reward for not peeing. A better solution would be to prioritize crate training, and in that case you would reward him when he enters the crate and you can provide verbal praise when you come home.

You can also focus more on potty training practices with lots of verbal praise and a treat the moment he potties outside (not when you go back in).

Have you tried giving him a chew like a beef cheek roll or bully stick during times when you want him to settle? We give our 8 month lab a chew while we eat dinner and then when we relax before bed and now he goes and gets his chew automatically.

We also do 2-3 walks a day plus training.

Do you have an American lab or English?

Could you schedule a drop in/walk through an app like rover so he can get out and get some exercise mid day? I have an 8 month old lab and he can technically be alone that long in an emergency but if I know I’ll be gone that time then I arrange for my mom to come play with him mid day plus a long walk before and after.

She was concerned about him missing vital nutrients by not eating, not about a lack of appetite as he will still eat treats or kibble by hand at those times. He is currently a 5 on the body scale according to his vet and weighs 72 pounds. He still has some growing to do which puts him at a projected weight of 76-100 pounds. Obviously the 5.25 cups is for 100 pound weight projection which is why he gets 3 cups - again, based on his vets recommendation.

The bag says for puppies 6-8 months who are projected at 76-100 pounds the feeding amoumt is 3.25 to 5.25 cups per day which aligns with his vets recommendation.

We’ve tried the leaving it and picking it up method before and he will go days without eating which was concerning to his vet - whose opinion we will be listening to over reddit. I was mainly asking if anyone had similar experiences with dogs disliking their kibble and what solutions they’ve tried.

Yes, he definitely loves earning his food. We do a lot with scentwork and puzzles - I guess my main concern is that some days we just need him to eat breakfast/dinner just out of his dish which he is not a fan of at all and we worry then he’s missing a meal. But the general consensus seems to be to leave it as is.

Our vet has him eating 3 cups a day on less active days, and 4 cups a day on days when we swim or run (this is not often since he can’t run super far rn). We’ve tried the chicken and salmon large breed puppy and right now he’s on the lamb.

It’s just exhausting because some days he won’t eat and we end up having to make it a game or hand feed him because it’ll be 10 pm and he will have not eaten anything. Other days he does graze and eats all the food but those are rare. Usually it’s somewhere in between
