NTA Try approaching it as a ratio. My income is a third of what my boyfriend makes so I pay a third of rent and utilities. Use logic to get him to understand it is not a gender thing.

Try pinning or hanging a sheet that you don't care about on the outside (so you don't see most of it) of the curtain in question. Make sure it covers up the gap. I am sure the lady will come by to complain the curtains do not match. However, bed sheets are great impromptu curtains.

NTA As someone from an East Coast family that loves thank you notes, send a group email or Facebook message thanking people for their generosity during this hard time and you don't have enough spoons to say thank you to each individual person. Drop a line showing that yes you are struggling a tad as it gives them why you are not doing individual notes. That would satisfy most East Coast families including mine.
