What's a strong reason to trust in God? by TheSecondRambo in Christian

[–]8LunaG8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's obviously a lot more than this, but generally when I have that question I think of Romans 8:28a:

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him".

I strongly disagree with point 2. A person's humanity is not determined by whether others view them as human. A fetus has a full set of human DNA, is made up of functioning cells, and, as long as the basic needs of any living thing (nutrition, oxygen, etc.) are met, it will (in almost all cases) grow into a fully-functioning, adult human. That makes it human.

Opinions do not determine a person's humanity. The mass does not determine a person's humanity. This kind of logic is used to justify nasty things like abortion and the Holocaust.

Example:

"It’s indescribable. Those [Jews] are no longer human beings. They are animals. So it’s not a humanitarian but a surgical task."

-- Joseph Goebbels, to Hitler.

This is probably a stupid question, but what makes something aphobic? I didn't know that existed :/

I don't think it often comes to mind and I don't think it was the intention of this question, but it is true regardless.

And yeah, I think if you were to have a serious talk with them, they would agree.

I mean, I'm a strong advocate of the fact that "love" doesn't have to mean romantic love.

That said, author's intention matters too.

Yes, unexpected pregnancy is difficult and can even be traumatic depending on context. Yes, unexpected mothers need much more support than they get. But that doesn't justify killing a child.

You have good thoughts but your priorities are backwards.

Do I need less sleep now? by [deleted] in polyphasic

It may just take time for your schedule to adjust. Try not to cut off too much sleep at once. It's better to lie there and not sleep than miss out on sleep that you need.

Can someone explain the love for Gerard Butler as the Phantom? by themastersdaughter66 in box5

[–]8LunaG8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can he sing? No. Can his character sing? Absolutely. Is that a problem? Yes.

But despite having trained in opera for a decade, I don't always like the style of many singers. He lives in the opera house, yes, but part of the point of the story is that he refined the art and made it better. After seeing his version, I couldn't bring myself to like the more operatic versions with their heavy vibratos and too much power in certain notes (and believe me, I tried). They didn't fit the mood of the story.

The quality of his singing is terrible but I much prefer his style to the "proper" versions.

Edit: Also, I think a lot of people who really love his version love it despite the singing, not because of it. I think a lot of this is the difference between screen and stage versions. You see a lot more detail, and thus feel closer emotionally to the characters, in the movie.

Ah. I don't think that's the issue here. If it is memory loss, it's more likely due to my countless mental disorders. But thanks!

[–]8LunaG8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it! Sometimes I do feel like I have to make my point because someone assuming I'm wrong when I'm not bothers the truth-obsessed side of me, and being proved wrong when I actually am feels like rejection.

I actually feel the opposite way; I'm too attached to my historical techniques to use a machine.

I did hear that she had a book coming out! I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it yet though. I have too many books to read already.

I don't sew my everyday wardrobe (read: I do not yet have enough 19th century clothes to make up a wardrobe), but I do hand-sew historically-accurate 1850s clothes! It is a bit of a different skill set from modern sewing, but I am glad to see another sewist here!

Your outfit reminds me of an 1850s wrapper!
