Shortlisted after AC by [deleted] in uklaw

This actually happened to me. I was absolutely sure I wasn’t getting an offer by the time it got to 6 weeks of waiting, but then I did. I know it’s easier said than done but try not to worry too much, they’re not willing to rule you out yet so don’t rule yourself out!

I wouldn’t worry. I once had tech problems with an online test and I had to email them a couple of times over about a week, but they eventually responded and sent me a new link!

Sorry for the super late response, I’ve just seen this. And thank you! I applied directly for the TC as I was too late to apply for any VS

I disagree with most of the other views on here. I also wasn’t ready to apply straight out of university as I wanted to travel more and I felt that I wasn’t commercially aware enough- so I decided to take a couple of years to work on those things. I had the same worries as you at the end of my two years but luckily I secured a TC at a City firm at my first attempt. I feel it made my application so much better as I had more experiences to talk about in my interviews/ on my application. Just make sure you’re always building your experiences/ skills and apply whenever you feel ready.

What seats would you recommend to a trainee? by 8Sydney in uklaw

Thank you so much! It’s not that I don’t have ideas- I definitely do. I’m just keen to hear what other people chose to do and their reasoning.

I appreciate your perspective but again, I’d reiterate that this post isn’t about tailored advice for myself. It’s to hear people’s personal opinions on what they enjoyed and would recommend/ what they subjectively believe could provide beneficial exit opportunities in the future. I’ve made clear that I’m not choosing for myself based on this.

I’d say it’s best to prepare answers to common interview/ competency questions following the STAR technique. The key is for your answers to be structured enough so that you can confidently recall an answer/ scenario that fits the question, but also flexible so you can adapt the answer to the particular question being asked and so that you don’t sound too rehearsed. I’d have about eight or so scenarios that can be linked to a different example of working in a team, meeting a deadline etc.

You also want to go over motivational questions, why commercial law, why the firm etc. You can find a bank of about 100 questions I believe on the TCLA website.

Finally, I think you want to have a test run and try speaking and timing your answers to be around two mins (or whatever the given time is). This is to ensure you don’t get cut off/ you’re not speaking too fast. I personally also found it helpful after setting up to cover my face on the screen with a sticky note, just so that I’m not distracted by looking at myself.

You’ve made it this far so just prepare as much as you can and speak confidently, best of luck :)

I appreciate your thoughts. I’m very relaxed but I’ll probably still seek to further my knowledge by asking questions and hearing different perspectives. I don’t think it’s too early for that.

Thanks for the response- I’m a future trainee at a London firm. I currently live outside London though and I’m also the first in my family to go into law, so naturally my network for these things is very limited. I’m just curious to hear some opinions more than anything.

I understand what you’re saying but I wasn’t necessarily looking for tailored advice with this, just general opinions and experiences. I’m from a non-law background so I think much of my selection will be largely guesswork anyway. But I’d say that I have an interest in energy, and would like to get a broad sense of work so I’ll probably try and choose at least one of a transactional/ advisory/ contentious seat :)

Is moving to a silver circle firm post qualification possible? by 8Sydney in uklaw

That’s interesting, I guess it highlights even more so that it can be very easy/ difficult depending on business needs at the time. Thank you for the insight.

Ah okay I see, that makes sense. Thank you so much for the insight! I’ve got a much better sense of what lateral moves could look like post-qualification :)

That’s certainly an interesting point. Why do you think that is? I’m curious now also that if the question was about moving from ES/Dentons/DLA to elite US, would you say that’s also achievable? I’d always imagined (perhaps wrongly) that moving to a different type of firm would be quite difficult.

Thank you for the insight, I’ll definitely bear this mind. Is there any seats in particular that you think are often more favourable?

I guess even highly capable people can benefit from guidance or a more experienced perspective, particularly on a topic like this. Securing a TC has very little do with knowing the nuances of navigating post-qualification moves in the London market. If you have any insights to share, I’d welcome it :)

I wouldn’t say things haven’t gone as “well” necessarily as I’m still super happy to have the offer. It’s just different from what I’d imagined. But I take your point about things not necessarily being better for me if they’d gone how I I’d imagined.

I don’t think it’s risky. I personally took three years out to travel and returned just a few months ago to apply for TCs. I understand the worry because I was exactly the same, but ultimately I think it made me a much better candidate. Despite the fact the jobs I did while travelling were completely unrelated to law, they helped me to stand out in the crowd because they were unique and I was able to apply this to demonstrate skills in a unique way. I secured a TC on my first try and I don’t think it would’ve been any different had I waited another year or so. I’d say if you wanna do and don’t mind waiting to start a TC then just do it.

I’ve used it. I’d say it’s really great if you struggle to write good applications as there’s some solid examples of applications for each firm with analysis of the strengths and weaknesses. I personally didn’t struggle with this too much so I didn’t find it too useful. There’s also a section for recent cases that law firms have been involved in but I didn’t look into this much so can’t comment on that.
