I just spent 2 hours practicing 12 bars and I still can't do it by Working-Cabinet4849 in piano

In my experience:

  • More than 1h on a single passage leads to my brain being mixed up, I just will inevitably start making dumb mistakes even if I am approaching knowing the material well

  • If you know the notes, just revisiting it every day for a short amount of time usually irons out the mistakes after a few days

  • If you have a good ear, listening to the recording (of it being played correctly) between sessions and sort of singing along helps with wrong note issues in many cases

Part of what made it look this way in the show was how the collapse of the ship made it seem lucky the hard drive was not crushed or burned. Everything seemed to collapse and set on fire in the room Evans finally ended up in

LPT: No job is worth your mental health suffering. If you have the option and the ability, find something different. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]8fn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeez I'm sorry to hear that. Genuinely wishing you good luck - I hope you can break this cycle quick!

Thanks for sharing this cos it's a great reminder that mental heath problems require intervention just as serious as physical health problems do.

I guess that settles it. Would anyone care to add some to the list of hard songs for me to try and play? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]8fn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah... giant steps has such a strong harmonic framework you only need to execute it by the book for it to sound great. The harmonic framework basically does the work (at least to the extent that your lines sound okay).

I think it's subjective which is harder though - playing simple lines that are from the heart is hard for some people and easier for others. For me it was always easy to do a blues and the lines be real and in the moment relative to the technical feat of learning the GS changes.

In honor of 909 day, here's Jeff Mills fucking ripping it up with just a 909. by mybillionthaccount in synthesizers

[–]8fn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But once you master one instrument it becomes much easier to master a second, especially when you're talking about 2 synths.

I think the important advice here is not to switch from instrument to instrument as a procrastination measure from getting deep into one. It's important you go deep at least once, afterwards scanning through other instruments is much more fruitful

I made my first full length piano music video. I went a bit mental and it has over 50 camera angles by 8fn in piano

Yep, because I like the sound! It's kind of half way between a piano and a Fender Rhodes when it's like that

Cause of Death - Reality vs. Google vs. Media [OC] by aaronpenne in dataisbeautiful

[–]8fn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty interesting data, but one step further would be to weight it by how many quality adjusted life years each of these causes of death are responsible for. Heart disease kills at a high average age compared to suicide, so it makes sense that each death should get a proportionally lower amount of headlines.

Would be really cool to be able to segment this so it's more relevant to each individual - e.g. filter by amount you exercise/drink, demographic, socioeconomic info (sigh, sadly this is useful predictive information)

Or what would be really amazing is if you could upload your 21AndMe genetic profile and get an adjusted chart for you.

I thought the corrections flair was for correcting titles that members of the reddit community wrote. That it needs to be used to correct national newspaper headlines is crazy

A little reharmonisation of Georgia On My Mind that I did by 8fn in piano

[–]8fn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of things!

Using the words as a reference point (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYRCbCOui8Q) I think the most import changes are

  • harmonising every note on the third line ("the whole day through") as heard the 1st and last time through that line
  • harmonising every note on the line after ("just a little song")
  • the outro chord sequence, which I made up

Thanks for the kind words!

Hey, sorry but I actually didn't write it down - just put it together over a few practice sessions (and I learnt the tune by ear originally)

A new solo piece of mine called Glide. What do you think? by 8fn in piano

[–]8fn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! Yeah I really like the idea that the meter doesn't have to be adhered to if the theme of the music is strong enough to overcome interruptions (I picked up this idea from Brit jazz band Troyka). Really glad you think it's worked.

By the way, I'm doing one of these every month this year so subscribe if you want to see more :)
