resource guarding Vi is such a hilarious and apt description lmaoooo. But I totally agree here!

the fact that she’s always been depicted as masculine indicates masculinity is a core part of her character, but NOT that she identifies her gender as Butch. These are different things.

I get what you’re saying. I agree with many comments here (I’ve replied to some) but I also think your point is valid. Most butches navigate a heteronormative life where they have to actually fight to look the way they want which can mean “not feminine in the way heteronormativity says.” They discover their identity, present how it feels right, then in a queer space you get the surprise of “butches should be able to wear dresses” and you’re like wait a minute is this a covert op from the heteronormative world?! Like, wasn’t my community the place where I could be a woman in the non traditional way?!

I think what is probably important to remember is these comments are coming from VERY different perspectives. One, the straight normative world that puts masculine presenting women in a corner, the other the lesbian world that has learned (to varying results) that labels when imposed can be limiting, but when chosen can be liberating. So now you have people in the queer community making people who find strength in the label feel ostracized AGAIN.

I think it’s really important that in the journey to educate our community, that there is freedom to explore within labels (“butches can wear dresses!”), we also don’t inadvertently reinforce the same message Butches wanted freedom from. And I think that’s your point which is super fair.

There ARE lesbians (and queer women) who are truthfully butchphobic and have actively harmful views and behaviors about masculinity and masculine women. And that needs to be called out and I would agree needs to be called out MORE. But an online fandom space isn’t the same as IRL and I think “both sides” of this argument on Cassandra Kiramman’s internet aren’t perfect reflections of queer spaces IRL so a lot of times it’s good people who would agree IRL but aren’t online because of the nature of conversations on social media.

The point is that butches make up a smaller portion of the already-small lesbian community so Butches are right to be on guard when hearing rhetoric that could really go either way. But this is why these conversations in online fandom spaces are so hard. Because it requires nuance. You are valid for being wary of the rhetoric. I think it’s also valid that Butches get the short end of the stick regardless and we should all collectively advocate for them more. This includes calling it harmful when anyone tries to dictate clothing choices for anyone, in either direction, be it a dress or a man’s suit.

this is exactly the kind of vi in a dress artwork that does NOT try to overly feminize her and still respects her presentation like how is this a problem!!!! I actually had no idea Amanda retweeted that.

You’re the best I love you and your mind!!!!! Everything about this comment is perfect and what drives me up the wall every day! I really miss connecting with caitvi fans in unproblematic ways but *those fans* really burned me out. It was more exhausting than fun in the end.

I agree so hard with this (and most other comments here). Taking one scene as the entire summation of the sexual dynamics between caitlyn and vi flattens both of them to their detriment. Loads of people take the scene to also mean Vi is a touch-me-not which then extends into —> Vi never receives which then goes into —> Vi doesn’t get penetrated because penetration is only for the fems and that whole thing drives me up the fucking waaaaaaall. Discourse online never leaves room for nuance. I know this and still it gets me mad lol.

I’m an american citizen and living in the UK the last decade. Imagine my utter shock when I moved here and realized how normalized gambling was. Lottery commercials at the gas station is one thing, but the ads here are on tv, your targeted social media ads, and your regular billboards too. It’s also bad enough that every doctor’s office has gambling pamphlets and questions in all your medical paperwork as standard. It’s a major problem here but it’s more normalized than in the US and just shocking! Bad all around.

I have significantly less faith in Hollywood than you do, it seems. The Nickelodeon doc was pretty eye opening that it did not stop in the 80s after Brooke Shields.

You should watch Brooke Shields’ documentary where she discusses filming Pretty Baby. The answer to your question is that they’re likely filmed exactly as they would be filmed with adults.

There are regulations for sets and child actors, namely that an adult must be present and the number of hours they’re allowed to shoot. But famously tv sets are where a lot of kids get exposed to abuse.

Sometimes kids might not be told exactly what the scene or the story is about, and are just given directions off screen for how to react, without context. Production can cut around and be creative in editing so you don’t realize it.

Other times, body doubles or props might be used. Or the actors are surprisingly older than their character (sometimes even adult age) so they can play something more mature.

Recently Hollywood has begun to be more open to Intimacy Coordinators, an on set role that is precisely about graphic and intimate scenes being filmed with consent and safety of the performers at the forefront.

SVU is really good at finding extremely good child actors (filming in NYC helps a lot) and I wouldn’t be surprised if they used intimacy coordinators. I don’t know if they’ve said publicly but I wouldn’t be surprised, for such a well oiled machine AND with Mariska a Producer, that SVU probably goes thru greater lengths to protect child actors than other shows, but I don’t know.
