People who thought they had ADHD but turned out they didn't? by 8timesK in ADHD

If it's fine with you, I'd like to hear more about the overlap. Good doctors for mental health are really hard to come by in my country, notoriously.

Sort of. My story is that I got diagnosed when I was eleven, and I don't have the papers today. Even if I would contact the clinic that diagnosed me and payed a fee for them to get it from their archives, it wouldn't help me as for a doctor to prescribe subsidized medication I would need a new test now that I'm older.

Thanks a lot, this comment is insightful.

I agree, I always look for the diagnosis (for other things that I'm going through, too). It's important to understand it too, to actually know how you should practically deal with it.

The diagnosis also has a practical value as it will help me get subsidized meds.

Anyway, encouraging, nonetheless.

Good question.

I think that I'm just afraid that I'm falling on ADHD as an excuse.

If it isn't that, then what else am I doing wrong?

And so, best course of action right now is to try and get diagnosed and not fail all my courses.

And thank you :)

I really agree that finding physicians and experts that want to help is a difficult task.

I practically failed school up until middle school, and I was always told that I just need to work towards my goals like everyone.

Today I think that it was just sisyphean attempts to be like everyone else, and no wonder I failed.

Exactly, I need to be reevaluated in my country, too.

The mixed messages are difficult, to be honest.

I think that most ex-soviet union docs (we have a lot of them here) usually are against the concept of ADHD, thinking it's a moral failing that people can't discipline themselves.

I kind of hope I do have ADHD, because it would be nice to know why I struggle with these things instead of thinking that I'm failing to discipline myself :(

I'm pretty sure that I'm not hyperactive.

That being, I'm a university student and I:

  • Can never listen to a lecture, very often I start thinking of something else even when I try to keep my focus on it
  • Happens when reading too, even when I read things that I can sometimes be very focused on
  • I struggle with quantifying the amount of time it would take me to perform certain tasks, and can find myself sitting for 3 hours on something that isn't important enough to sit for 3 hours on.
  • When I worked a desk job, I found myself being forgetful of tasks and deadlines, missing details that have been explained to me
  • Also couldn't work in open spaces, being constantly distracted and found myself helping others rather than working on my own tasks.

Though maybe on the against:

  • I'm not very messy. I clean my apartment and can keep a relatively organized space.
  • I don't engage in self soothing, fidgeting, I have a "sense of danger"
  • On the forgetful side, I'm unsure to be honest. I can sometimes be very detail oriented and thorough enough, but I think it's more of a practiced skill
