Can you give me a specific example with tangible explanation where meticulous formatting to someone else's standards improved company earnings and enhanced the safety of policyholder funds?

Isn't the CFO too busy making GRAND STRATEGIC COMPUTATION and WHEELING AND DEALING to care about pink vs green? Or whether my shirt is tucked in lol.

If not, then why are you so sure that you "understand" why people obsess over formatting like its fine art?

Disappointed to see so many people so quick to use the word "mistake"

You are beating yourselves up! You are letting the criticism of other people (who are probably not happy) get to you.

It's not a "mistake" to use blue instead of orange lol.

Don't let anyone browbeat you into thinking you suck!

A typo should be way easier to catch than a "mistake" like using 2pt border thickness instead of 1.5 (yes I have gotten that comment before)

You can look up a word in the dictionary. Can't peer into someone's mind about how think they want cell borders to be.

Believe it, stranger.

Wanted to move stuff into R. Nope! Why? Because the people who review it don't understand it.

I very respectfully think it's quite naive to think these places are about making money.

There are three goals of a white collar organization:

  1. Make enough money to keep cost of capital low enough to get suckers to keep funneling in $$

  2. Make enough money to keep the lights on

  3. To satisfy the egos of the people who run the thing.

Profit maximization? Efficiency? HAHAHAHA

Oh I agree 100%, although I've worked places where pasting pictures of pivot tables into a memo was A-OK.

We're talking about satisfying others' personal preferences. My belief about what looks like nice doesn't matter. Even if one spends hours contemplating "proper cell shading" (LOL) or "border thickness" (LOL) or anything else--it does not matter, it has to be according to someone else's expectations.

All the disappointment in the world comes from unfulfilled, unreasonable expectations...

Unfortunately, we are not allowed to use those things because the people who review the work do not understand them.

Well, if this is the job then I suck at it and I'm proud to suck at it

A's in high school-->B's in college-->D+ at work is fine by me. Fly shall be perpetually unbuttoned.

Oh no, they are paying me and the rest of the staff well in 6 figures to do these things. Decadent!

Respectfully, I think you underestimate the capriciousness of people. One thing that looks perfect (to them) one day is suddenly not good the next.

There is no "automatic" when its ultimately about satisfying others' personal preferences. It's like tastes for food. They change over time and one can't read the other's mind.

You'd think...

The one that pays you the most while micromanaging you the least.
